2 out of 5 stars Worth a listen or two.......2006-09-25

I was drawn to this band because they cited Flesh For Lulu as one of their primary influences. This appears to be in vain, because where Flesh For Lulu layered affectionate, bittersweet songs with dark, political, even sci-fi undertones, One of the Loudest Tragedies Ever Heard convolutes themes like violence, drug culture and science fiction with no substance to bind it all together. It's all luster and no matter.

There are some bands that can pull off style over substance. For example, I liked Louis XIV's "The Best Little Secrets Are Kept", because it had a nice glam-rock sound, enough confidence in its shallowness and it didn't take itself seriously. Not to mention its songs, although slight, were actually about something.

A problem here is that, while there is some good music to be found, there is a lack of ambition that undermines the whole album. Singer Johnny Fisher has a raspy voice that suits the material, but he is at a loss of things interesting to sing about. The songs are filled with akward, clunky, annoying lyrics that have seemingly no purpose. He drones out clumsy lines like "drain blame waste fame/guns sun play dumb" and "backlash eyelash kill 'em with attack" with a disinterested tone throughout.

Fortunately, he's backed by some good performances. Guitarist Mark Zarnow (assuming I'm giving proper credit) flavors the songs with his own take on noise rock and space-age. The album opens nicely with his dreamy, hypnotic riff for "Love and Attention". He has some nice moments on tracks like "Loaded Gun" and "Mind Over Matter" and takes the band's remake of Brian Eno's "Baby's On Fire" to heights it doesn't deserve to go. Also, there is solid drumming throughout by Claudia.

All in all, "Situation Nowhere" is victim to the usual snags of a debut disc. It is self-conscious and takes retreat in its influences far too often. There isn't much to the lyrics, indicating they intended on getting by on their post-punk style alone. Hopefully on their next effort, they'll be interested in exploring more than just their sound.
