Now I fear you've left me standing in a world that's so demanding.......2007-04-05
Just when you're ready for post-grunge rock to die a band comes around that breathes new life into it. This time, The Waking seem to have taken the challenge. Ripped right from the pages of their prodominant peers (as has been overly stated already, Tool and Staind), The Maze is debut EP they have to offer.
Comparisons aside, The Waking have a lot going for them. Sure they capture the heavy aspect of rock but they also completely grasp the lighter, more experimental side as well. It's when they're experimenting that some of the CDs best parts are brought to light, what with the eery guitar melodies and Perf's great (yet immediately comparable) vocals. When they are putting on the 'rock' hat, some of the riffs they churn out are really quite impressive, and other times...not so much.
Restless throws you right into the world The Waking give you with The Maze. Restless is a classic case of a radio song (not always a bad thing!). It's easily accessible but doesn't grate the nerves when you hear it a few times. Tomorrow is one of the tracks that I'm not quite sure of. Everything fits together just fine but it just feels like more of the same, which is strange since you're only on the second track. True Faith serves as the reason to buy The Maze. The downplayed verses giving way to a soaring chorus isn't new by any means but I'll be damned if Perf's voice doesn't set this song apart from the other versions. Never Go Away and Drive are both great with the latter, Drive, giving us some excellent riffs and vocals. The former is a slower song with the lyrics on display more. The Maze's echo-y effect works well enough in the beginning of the track to make it a standout. The psuedo bonus track cleverly titled [Bonus Track] is merely a demo of Restless, so nothing to bend over backwards for.
My favorite songs are Restless, True Faith, and Drive. The Waking have talent and I'll be waiting to hear something full-length from them because if this EP is any indication we'll all be in store for something special. Here's hoping it won't be a long wait!
Surprisingly Good Post-Grunge Rock........2006-12-06
This band IS just as described in the other reviews. Take Maynard Keenan of Tool and place him as the lead singer of Staind, and you have a good approximation of Waking. Dark, Aggressive beats with a brooding yet melodic voice makes for some great tracks. Like the others, the only complaint I can voice is the lack of tracks, otherwise I would rate 5 stars. If you are a fan of the Tool / Staind sound you REALLY owe it to yourself to get this album.
Pretty Good.......2006-11-06
Pretty good cd, could use a few more songs, though. Very good overall, and i like the live song at end of cd. I recommend.
Excellent! Amazing! .......2006-05-11
Every song is awesome. incredible vocals and well rounded sound all around. lyrics that aren't cliche or "cheesy". Their cover of "true faith" is so good, I would say it sounds better than the original by New Order. Dark and substantive, yet not too heavy. Love it.
