Customer Reviews:
Rookie of the Year .......2005-05-24
Can't say I agree at all with the critical vocal bashing I've read in a couple of the other reviews. Let's cut right to the chase...Robyn Miller can flat out sing. Her vocals are powerful when they should be and likewise smooth when it time's to come down a few notches. Robyn is joined by a talented trio to complete the band and together they rock. The Peels are a kicking band and their deput CD is a great addition to any collection. Don't be surprised to see 'Only Son' or 'Lay' gain common radio play. Highly recommend this buy...
Cool*.......2005-04-17
The Peels are a hard rock band from San Francisco. They were once based in Seattle. This is their first CD as far as I know. They are visceral. They are a powerful group. They want to rule. The song "Only Son" has the feeling of something great. The singer Robyn Miller is really good, especially on "You Talk Too Much." She reminds me of someone in between The Distillers and maybe a little like Von Iva. "Lay" sounds like a lot of Swedish punk. "Gold Chains" has the sound of a lot of hard rock from the 1970s. That is what I noticed on my recent trip to San Francisco. There are a lot of bands like Parchman Farm who seem obsessed with the rock styling of Blue Cheers and AC/DC. This band is fun and likes to rock out. You should check them out.
Vocalist Needed for Great Band.......2005-03-29
Instrumentally, THE PEELS sound like one of the best bands in the business. That's good, since the band's name is truly awful. The band plays hard rock, not Top-40 pop, as their name suggests.
But this CD, and the band, are most likely headed for oblivion. Every song starts out sounding very strong -- until the vocals cut in, and sink it. The thin whiny pop-song voice is badly mis-matched against hard rocking guitar bass and drum tracks.
This was a big problem at their 2005 SXSW Showcase too, where the pop vocal stylings only served to undermine the instrumental playing, and made them "just another boring band" in concert. Even the local music media ignored them.
If the Peels can't find a good vocalist, they're probably better off disbanding.
better on cd.......2005-03-13
Fantastic live. Boys shine whether live or on CD. Vocals less so live, better on CD. All in all, impressive for a new release.
