5 out of 5 stars the next level?.......2005-02-24

If you stopped with "The Dark Is Just the Night" and haven't kept up with Victory at Sea over the years, you may well be surprised by the content of Memories Fade. But the strong rhythmic quality of the early work and Mona's voice is just as strong as ever. This is actually more of a rock record than "The Good Night" which (after the first 3 tracks) was largely acoustic and soft. Both records are great though, and I must say that had Victory at Sea continued to solely produce records like the great ones they made early on, we'd probably get a bit bored.
And the extra instrumentation really adds a lot to these songs.
If you're able to keep up with the progressions made by the members of Slint and Rodan (listen to recent Shipping News, TJO or Papa/Aerial M)you'll appreciate what Victory at Sea has been accomplishing, seemingly under the indie rock radar.
This album seems to me like the best synthesis of the different sides of the band's music.

3 out of 5 stars Indie rock goes a bit lounge..........2005-01-07

Wow! What a difference 7 years makes. When I first heard VaS, it was on a college radio station, where they played "Aerial View"from their debut album"The Dark is Just The Night". Back then, they were still in their Slint/Rodan phase and didn't utilize violin as much, relying more on classic math rock guitars and angular song structures.. I just listened to the CD again a few weeks ago and it's still one of my favorite records of the 90s.
