4 out of 5 stars If You Wanna Get To Heaven..........2004-07-16

One of the best things I've ever done recently is to let my cousin talk me into driving six hours to see a solo Marty Wilson-Piper acoustic show on a weeknight. Only two dozen other devotees came out to a local Chicago bar on that Monday night and it would be accurate for me to disclaim that I wasn't a Marty Wilson-Piper "devotee." Truth be told, I actually sold Marty's "Art Attack" cd well over a decade ago for something like 3 bucks and now I'm told that the title is out of print. If more than 24 people showed up at that solo gig, I'd probably be kicking myself for not holding on to "Art Attack" and peddling it on eBay for a profit.
Nonetheless, I was down on my luck and remembered a few good tracks from that late 80's release so I made the trip with my relative. The intimate setting of the performance, as well as the low turnout, led to a nice acoustic overview of Marty's solo work, something that I had obviously not been up to speed on. What's remarkable is how, even in the loose confines of the performance, the songs stood out and became entrenched in my memory. So much so that I figured I owed Marty a few bucks and purchased "Hanging Out In Heaven" straight from his own hands and autographed as well.
The disc opens with the tremendous "Forget The Radio," a wonderful affirmation of cult artists (certainly Marty qualifies) and disdain of America's corporate radio status. "Andy Partridge/Robert Wyatt/You hear it/You buy it" and as yet another music obsessed individual, a smile crept across my face after hearing that line. Other highlights include "You Bring Your Love To Me," "1929 Vintage Wine," and "All Those Wires." One of Marty's most personal songs, "I Don't Think So," is also included with powerful lyricism on the uncertainty of relationships. "Will you be there?/I don't think so/I know so" but judging by his delivery, this confidence sounds more like a plea than a definitive statement.
Largely acoustic, "Hanging Out In Heaven" won't make any new fans for Marty and even some Church fans may find the release a bit tiresome. Ironically, its simplicity is what reawakened me towards looking more closely at his solo output. And I'm fairly confident that if you download the sample of "Forget The Radio" you too will hear it and then buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Very slow...very mellow.......2002-11-12

I too like most people purchased this disc after being re-introduced to The Church via Napster (imagine that). There is no real close comparison with this release to anything by The Church, nor any of his prior work. This is a very mellow, solid 14 songs release. At times the songs drag along like Magician Amongst the Spirits but overall it's more consistent than that. Sanctuary and Wreck make this release worthwhile, yet don't get this expecting Starfish or Rhyme. I would recommend his earlier CD's Rhyme & Spirit Level if your looking to expand from The Church into Marty's solo stuff. If your a big fan of his raw upbeat guitar work from earlier CD's or from The Church I would suggest his side project with the members of All About Eve called Seeing Stars (self titled). Last I heard from Marty it was set to be re-released...it's creative, upbeat & awsome! Other good side projects from The Church are SK's Slow Crack, Jack Frost's Snow Job and Peter Koppes Water Rites CD.

How can you go wrong with anything these guys do? This album is better than anything on the radio these days. The best song you'll never hear on the radio? "Swans." It rocks and has a great melody. Forget Matchbox 20- if you want to hear music that will keep you humming all day long, get something/anything by the Church.
