Horny Surf?.......2006-06-11
Upon first hearing Jerry Cole's style of surf music you may actually be let down coz it doesn't sound so much like surf music. After repeated listens you realize that this is actually a damn good cd, and what you didn't like about it becomes what you like most about it. Surf rock does have a bit of a sameness about it, and Cole managed to create his own sound. So in describing Cole's sound, you can't just say, "Oh yeah, he sounds like The Surfaris". There's a bit of a lounge-y feeling to Cole's stuff. Alot of horns. Of course the expected reverb guitar sound is there too, but in moderation. Alot of these are original tunes too, which is always cool. Jerry Cole is a very unique talent, but unfortunately the guy will never be recognized by the public for it. This disc is the proof however, and I'd highly suggest it for anyone who would like to try their surf with a twist.
Journeyman Jerry And Some Spacemen Session Musicians.......2004-04-06
Jerry Cole played lead guitar in the studio group Jerry Cole & His Spacemen, which featured Plas Johnson on saxophone, Ray Pohlman on bass guitar, Don Randi on keyboards and Hal Blaine on drums. The 20 songs in this collection were taken from their three albums, "Outer Limits" (1963), "Surf Age" (1964) and "Hot Rod Dance Party" (1964). Any notion that this professional studio group would be too polished to rock out is immediately dispelled after listening to the aptly named "Power Surf." "Deep Surf" is a slow song featuring a shimmering guitar tremolo, while the marimbas and brass give it a south of the border feel. "Outer Limits" has a deeper and more ominous sound than the original version, done by the Marketts. "Night Rumble" is the best of the hot rod tunes, as it chugs along with a mean rocking beat. "Roadster Run" zooms along at a fast pace, and features the saxophone to great effect. "Racing Waves" combines the best elements of hot rod and surf instrumentals, and closes out this collection out on a strong note. After his stint with the Spacemen, Jerry took over for Van Morrison as the lead guitarist and vocalist for the group Them. He also did session work with the Byrds, Ray Charles, Johnny Rivers and countless others. Jerry also served as bandleader and lead guitarist for Sonny and Cher, Rick Nelson and even Elvis Presely!
overlooked artist.......2003-12-09
Jerry Cole recorded three albums for Capital in the 60's. His band included Hal Blaine, another of the infamous (along with Jerry), young L.A. studio guys that made many of Phil Spector's records, known as The Wrecking Crew, which included Tommy Tedesco, Leon Russell, Glen Campbell, and so many others that you hear every day on the radio but don't realize who exactly these musicians are, even though they're great and their sounds have been the soundtrack of your life for as long as you can remember. Jerry was talented enough to back up Elvis, so you know he's good. If you like surf and hot rod music, this is a great CD. The Hal Blaine CD is good, too (Deuces. T's an Roadsters)..................
