Customer Reviews:
Why isn't this guy a star?.......2003-11-20
Great songwriters like Troy Campbell are often passed over for 'marketable & saleable' tripe made for the brain-dead MTV 'educated' market. Campbell's is a master of turning a phrase, and has an incredible knack for blending his wordplay with original, thoughtful music. His delivery reminds me of Nick Drake meets Big Star. All of the songs are great, with highlights being 'Blind', 'Sad Truth', 'Rosabelle' & 'Ruby.' Gurf Morlix's year spent with Lucinda Williams pay off with his gifted production skills on 'American Breakdown.' Buy this, you'll be a better person for it. ;)
top ten cd.......2003-07-27
I just spent the last week listening to
this great cd. it covers a lot of ground
and I've already bought a couple extra for my
friends.
Troy Campbell continues to grow.......2002-08-09
With the release of "American Breakdown," Troy Campbell shows how much he has grown, both as a singer and songwriter. Framed by Gurf Morlix's muscular rock and roll production, Campbell is singing more confidently than he ever has on record. The songs are lyrically and melodically richly evocative - from the opening "Sad Truth" to "Sorrytown" to "World Keeps on Ending." Campbell shows he isn't afraid to confront his demons and nightmares, turning them into gorgeous examples of songwriting art.
Troy Campbell: American Breakdown, A Roots-Rock Diamond.......2002-08-02
Back in 1999, I was fortunate to hear Troy Campbell's debut solo disc Man vs Beast. That's saying a lot living in Boston, many miles away from the Texas heartland. Having been a huge fan of the Loose Diamonds, his former band, I was eager to hear what the man would be up to on his own. I was impressed, but ultimately felt that the album sounded somewhat tentative and without a definite direction. Three and 1/2 stars seemed adequate. Recently, however, I was privileged to listen to the new cd, American Breakdown. It is an absolute wonder! Easily one of the top roots rock albums of the past year, it is a work filled with hope, desire, maturity, and direction. This cd needs to be heard and, if there is any justice in the music world, it will. Those of you who pick it up will be amazed at the emotion Troy puts in his work and the solid playing behind each song. Will it reach the proverbial "top of the charts"? Probably not, but I can pretty much guarantee you will not be disappointed. The world needs more of this. Absolutely!
