Danny Gatton ranks with rock & roll's all-time tragic guitar heros. One of the 1980s' greatest guitarists--and unquestionably one of the most eclectic and versatile axe-men ever--he committed suicide in 1994 without achieving the kind of fame his talent should have provided. Though initially considered a rockabilly guitarist, due to his associations with Roger Miller and Robert Gordon, this all- instrumental debut solo album (later LPs feature occasional guest vocalists) reveals that the man could, and did, play everything--jazz, country, blues, folk, swing...you name it. Most of the tracks here are originals, the exceptions being a John Martyn cover, Charlie Patton's "Funky Mama," "The Simpsons Theme," and a heart-wrenching cover of the Beach Boys' "In My Room" that could make Brian Wilson weep. --Bill Holdship

A Sonic Assault.......2006-03-18
I remember that just before I bought this in 1993 I was pretty
fed up with the state of Guitar Playing. At the time, the gloom and doom of the latest wave had settled over the world of guitar playing like a rain cloud. This guy turned it all around for me.
I have seen and heard some of the greatest guitar players more than once but what Danny did on this album is mind boggling. The thing is, it is pure, honest, beautiful, mean, technically impressive, music. Just a box of ear candy.
If you appreciate a good guitar player than you are in for a treat. There has never been anybody whom I recommended this album to that was disappointed.
No question! Gatton is the BEST!!!!.......2004-06-15
I'm a big fan of guitar-based music, and I've written several reviews on Amazon including guitarists, this is one review that I felt long overdue, and in total praise to the late, great Danny Gatton, and his music.
88 Elmira St. is one of those albums that would be instantly liked by anyone who enjoys good instrumental music, regardless of age. It nods in so many musical directions that it's hard to single one particular strand out. There's blues, jazz, funk, country, bluegrass, swing, '50's-style rock and roll, and all these styles could be found in one song!!
As for the tunes themselves, there is a longevity that will have many returning for a second listen. The toe-tapping rock'n'roll showcase of "Elmira St. Boogie" (complete with a 'rock around the clock' cameo appearance), the sleazy jazz of "Harlem Nocturne", and the muted, and ever-so-catchy "Quiet Village" are a few personal favourites.
88 Elmira Street is a must-buy for any muso!!!!
The most versatile of all musicians.......2004-03-17
I've just played this morning as I was getting ready for work. I got in a bit late as I played 'In my room' for a third time. Id have to say Danny Gatton is the most rounded and versatile guitarist Ive ever heard, although '88..' leans more towards the rockabilly side of things. Still, it's a master class in how to play with speed, feeling and musicality. Metal shredders would do well to listen to any of his albums to hear how it should be done. That Danny Gatton never received the acclaim he deserved is a sad indictment of the shallowness of the music industry and the tastes of the general public. He certainly deserves a posthumous reappraisal.
Astounding.......2003-08-24
This is the first Danny Gatton CD I purchased. I am sure anyone looking up his CD's on here has seen the outstanding reviews. They were a factor in my checking out one of his cd's. Well, even all of those reviews can't explain how amazing Danny Gatton was. I love guitar, and I have played guitar since I was 10 years old. But I have NEVER heard guitar playing like this. Especially on the Rockabilly style tracks. I was just in awe listening to 'funky mama' and 'emmira st boogie'. I am going to purchase every bit of material I can find by him.
Danny Gatton - Simply The Best There Ever Was.......2003-08-23
88 Elmira Street is proof of that. I've played guitar for over thirty years studying the greats, analyzing the fingering and fretwork, the tones, the phrasing - I can copy most all of them now, but can't touch Danny's stuff. "Danny does everyone and no one does Danny" was the word behind the scenes....and you can believe it!
Okay, I could sing the praises of His Majesty Mr. Gatton for DAYS on end, but lets get cookin' here. What we all wanna know is who can compare? Well, I aint found many, but trust me on these Amazon releases: 1. Scotty Anderson "Triple Stop" will shock ya.....2. Roy Buchanan "Live In Japan" and "Worlds Greatest Unknown Guitar Player" are both astounding!....3. Jerry Donahue "Telecasting Recast" is gorgeous......4. Greg Koch "The Grip" is a mindblower, technical AND smooth....5. Anything by The Hellecasters (a J. Donahue led group) will be pleasing.....6. D.C. area running mate Tom Principato "Really Blue" and "In The Clouds" are excellent as well.....and that's about it for REALLY SERIOUS RECOMMENDATIONS. Other CD's by the above-mentioned are pretty good bets also - can't think of a clunker in the crowd.
There are lots of other greats I could recommend, but when yer talkin' to Danny Gatton fans, the bar is raised to the top and ya can't mess around.
