Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A winner.......2005-04-17

tim rogers of Youami fame returns with his second solo album and produces more of the same beautifull music that has made him a true songman of the ages. I can't understand how he comes up with these gems. It seems to me he has lived for a hundred years or more and can throw all those experiences into damn fine shake your hips or your heart music and put it on the shelves for a few notes and change. On this venture he talks about his Wife, his band and his life. His phrasing is absolute spot on genius backed by truly rocking and laidback tunemanship. This collection of songs here on this disc SPIT POLISH come at you like barrell of booze, one minute your rocking then your reflecting and then you wake up and ask where can I get some more. If you like a mix of rock, country twang and folky shuffling all wrapped up in thoughtfull lyrics then put your money down on this one. Buy this album today.

5 out of 5 stars Songs That Shine.......2004-05-02

This is one of those albums I bought without hesitatation as soon as it hit the shelves of my local record store and I hadn't even heard a single tune - such is my faith in Tim Roger's ability to write a great song. It's been a long wait since his stunning 1999 solo debut 'What Rhymes With Cars And Girls' however frontman duties for Australia's best rock band 'You Am I' have kept him rather busy.

On first listen to 'Spit Polish' it's evident that this album isn't 'What Rhymes With Cars And Girls' Part 2 but rather an entirely different but no less brilliant piece of work. 'What Rhymes With Cars And Girls' for the most part was a quiet and solitary affair that you felt had been recorded alone in his bedroom at 3am. Certainly that made for a lo-fi whimsical and intimate songwriter's album but didn't leave much room for the songs to stretch their legs. This album is like opening the window to that same songwriters bedroom and letting a summer's breeze through. With his new band 'The Temperance Union' Tim Rogers sounds like he's having fun and that lends the songs some spark and punch.

Overall it is far looser than his debut and more bluesy in parts. Sure, you've still got a good measure of country twang but hey this album even rocks out in some songs with the same conviction as You Am I. And it's wonderful (and interesting) to hear Tim rockin' out with other musicians and clearly enjoying himself. With his new band he sounds positively invigorated and that is what is so impressive about 'Spit Polish' - it sounds like a 'band' album.

Standout tracks are: Some Fellas Heartbreaker, Goldfields Blues, Time & Distance, The Mess and Letter To Gene.
