Customer Reviews:
You've got to hear these guys ..........2006-06-25
I love this band. I too was hesitant to believe The Panics could come up with something I could enjoy as much as their debut 'A House on a Street in a Town I'm From' It didn't take long before I was mesmerised by the laid back, elemental, hypnotic hooks that abound on this album.
I'm no fan of country music at all but I can definitely see the influences of country in their music as my fellow reviewer mentioned. However, they've used those influences to create something so completely new and different that using the term 'country' (even pre-fixed by 'alt') to describe their sound is mis-leading. I must admit I don't know how to categorise them myself - I just know they're amazing.
The music just has this lazy, ethereal yet funky groove that hooks you right in. A dry, driving rythym that once you hear it, immediately evokes a very Australian sound and feel. I can't explain it, you've just got to experience it yourselves - I swear you won't regret it.
Fave tracks - Twin Sister, Sleeps Like a Curse, My Best Mistake
Somedays, I hear them calling.......2005-09-21
Delivering a very alternative country sound, The Panics have blown me away with this album. To begin with I was hesitant - they are after all a new and unproven Australian band, but once I got hooked on 'My Best Mistake', the rest of the album gradually overtook me until I was looking at one of the most stunning australian releases ever.
I personally like the alt-country sound more than anything else right now, and it seems to resonate with a part of my Aussieness that I've only just discovered. So frankly, if you can't tolerate a thick country influence then you might be put off by this release. You will however be missing some brilliant compositions such as 'Like an unwelcome Guest', the gloomy 'Minor A' and the ....ahem.... outstandingly epic 'The General Calling', as well as the brighter and gomez-esque 'it's not a thing'.
