Customer Reviews:
Still Rocks Today!.......2006-04-30
Today, Starz is pretty much overlooked when 'music experts' reminisce and discuss 70's rock music. But back in the day, Starz was mentioned in the same breath as Aerosmith, Kiss, and Boston. Rarely a day went by when you wouldn't hear Starz cranking out in the parking lot after school. Nothing better than blasting 'Detroit Girls' and 'Live Wire' to pick you up at the end of the day.
Of the 4 Starz albums released in the 70's, their debut album 'STARZ' was the best. 'Starz' had an original melodic Hard Rock sound that I had not heard previously. Some of my favorites from this LP were 'Detroit Girls', 'Tear It Down', and 'Monkey Business', but nothing compared to 'Now I Can'. That was classic "getting fired up" music. Hard driving guitars that match up to anything produced by 90's Grunge bands.
Great memories, still Rocks!
I couldn't do it then, but Now I Can, Now I Can, Now I Can!
STARZ AND STRIPES.......2005-07-19
This is a class addition to any lovers of late 70's American rock CD collection. A band much in the vain of say New England (though a lot rougher around the edges) and of course the mighty (then) Kiss "RNR Over" era with a suprising Lizzy influence every so often. At times I think the songs come across as a tiny bit under polished but that could be mean spirited as there is lots to like. "(She's Just A) Fallen Angel" which I believe was the band's biggest hit single demonstrates amply that they had the hits formula but it is not a card they over played, sticking to varied and satifying selection of song types for their debut. "Pull The Plug" is a bar room blues slow pacer which adds much welcomed light and shade. A great atmospheric track much in the "Day of the Rocker" calibre off the Twisted Sister debut. "Over and Over" is another highlight with a chorus that wont quit. "Now I Can" reminds me of Alice Cooper when he was influenced by the Stones which can't be a bad thing. In summary I would describe this one as satisfying on first listen but perhaps not instant enough to hold its own against the bludgeoning bubblegum rock of the time for the casual listener. Sticking with it produces a very satisfying listen second or third time around. Certainly a prototype for the mass of eighties excess hair bands that followed from Hollywood. The difference is these guys had original ideas.
STARZ Rocks !.......2004-08-27
The 1st Starz album I picked up was their 1978 release"Coliseum Rock", only on the strength of the cover, loved the album as one of the few a** kickin' albums of the era.Subsequently sought out the other albums'"Violation",a futuristic concept album w/some hard rockers most notably,"Subway Terror",about a drugged up psycho terrorizing the underground labrynths of the
NY subway. The next album was,"Attention Shoppers",which has a pop feel but also has some really cool songs like,"X-ray Specs"(I can see right through you baby !).Finally brings me to strangely enough my last Starz acquisition, which is their 1st
album, which is being reviewed here. This album is arguably the guy's best & has them soundly beating their label mates Kiss @ their own game, not to mention one of the coolest album covers in the history of hard rock ! If you can't find their stuff go to starzcentral.com & all the CD's are there + more.
Fun Memories and Music From the 70's.......2004-05-04
I'd actually give this album three and 1/2 stars. When I think of Starz, I tend to think of fun melodic music from the mid seventies. They opened for quite a few big bands in the their day and won over a still-faithful legion of fans.
Starz was never a big commercial success, but they did manage to put out five albums of material. Released in 1976, this is the band's first album. On this album are several songs that became staples in the band's live shows: "Detroit Girls," "Boys In Action," "Fallen Angel," and "Pull The Plug."
