Customer Reviews:
THIS IS THE ULTIMATE EDGAR WINTER COMPILATION........2007-03-05
I was just conversing with my friend Metamorpho recently and commending him on a job well done on writing a fantastic review on Johnny Winter's legendary "SAINTS AND SINNERS" album. I also told him that coincidently, I was contemplating on writing a review on his brother Edgar and his legendary compilation album entitled "THE EDGAR WINTER COLLECTION." Without further delay, I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "THE EDGAR WINTER COLLECTION" by one of Rock's legendary bands. I give you one of Texas' pride and joy's who also just so happens to be the brother of another great legend, MR. JOHNNY WINTER. However, this review will highlight the one and only, MR. EDGAR WINTER. "THE EDGAR WINTER COLLECTION" was originally released in 1989 on Compact Disc on the Rhino Records label which is manufactured by CBS Records Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
EDGAR WINTER will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for being extremely versatile in playing different music styles consistantly well. WINTER would be known for his mixture and blend of Blues, Funk, Country Rock and Jazz. In a way, WINTER was the white man's answer to SLY & THE FAMILY STONE. This compilation album highlights EDGAR WINTER'S two legendary bands, EDGAR WINTER'S WHITE TRASH BAND and THE EDGAR WINTER GROUP. There are so many musicians in both these bands combined that I will just list the main musicians that were widely known prior to joining WINTER'S band. WINTER would recruit well know musicians such as the late great bassist Dan Hartman, lead and rhythm guitarist Rick Derringer, lead guitarist Ronnie Montrose and drummer Chuck Ruff. Combine them together with EDGAR WINTER and you have a portion of WINTER'S WHITE TRASH BAND and the almost completed EDGAR WINTER GROUP. EDGAR WINTER has released some great albums and some great hit songs throughout his whole career up to this very day. This music collection contains all of WINTER'S hits spanning from the 1971 to 1976 period. In my opinion, "THE EDGAR WINTER COLLECTION" is a true testament of the genius and musical creativity of a special unique band and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was indeed, ahead of their time.
Now its time to let the music do all of the talking. This disc jumps right in and begins with the funkish Rocker "Give It Everything You Got," the Jazzy Rocker "Easy Street," the soulful Rocker "Hangin' Around," the beautiful smooth mellow tempo "Tell Me In A Whisper," the forever popular legendary WINTER trademark funkish Rocker "Free Ride," the funkish soulful "Cool Fool," the beautiful orchestrated slow soothing "Dying To live," the blistering soulful Rocker "Keep Playin' That Rock n' Roll," the incredible sounding Country Rocker "Round & Round," the mellow fast paced Rocker "Miracle Of Love," the beautiful soulful slow smoothing "Diamond Eyes," the thunderous fast paced Rocker "River's Risin'," the funkish country Rocker "We All Had A Real Good Time," the forever groundbreaking a*s kicking funkish Rocker "Frankenstein" and the seventeen minute mindblowing country Rocker "Tobacco Road." WINTER'S charisma contributes in bringing the band together and bringing the best out of them. Derringer's and Montrose's blistering guitar riffs and licks bring out a special unique sound that gives the music a new life of its very own.
Overall, this legendary compilation album is definitely worth seeking and checking further into especially if you are a new and curious listener of EDGAR WINTER'S sound and music.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This compilation album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, EDGAR WINTER is here to stay. Rock n' Roll will always have a breath of fresh air as long as the brothers EDGAR & JOHNNY WINTER are around to create something new for Rock n' Roll. I know for fact that we have not seen or heard the last of either brother yet. THE WINTER brothers still have so much to contribute to Rock n' Roll that it would be hard to imagine Rock n' Roll without them. I anticipate with excitement that we will all be hearing from both of them in the near future soon. So here's to you Edgar, brother Johnny, the late great Dan Hartman, Rick, Ronnie, Chuck and the rest of the numerous band members I failed to mention. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. EDGAR WINTER RULES. JOHNNY WINTER RULES. R.I.P. DAN HARTMAN. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
MONSTER MASH.......2005-10-21
Blues rocking Texan Edgar Winter's greatest hits only contains a pair of bona fide Top 40 classics, the chart topping instrumental "Frankenstein" (kids, think Tiger Woods' car ad of a few years back), and the Dan Hartman composed and sung "Free Ride". But that's hardly the point. The well respected keyboardist/saxman dabbles easily in country ("Round and Round"), pure blues ("Tobacco Road"), horn driven rock ("Keep Playin' That Rock and Roll"), funk ("We All Had a Real Good Time"), and other musical genres. After sampling this potpourri of pop styles, new fans are advised to check out "Roadwork", a blistering live outing by Edgar Winter's White Trash (a soul/blues revue with guest blasts from Rick Derringer and brother Johnny Winter) and the seventies milestone "They Only Come Out at Night", featuring "Frankenstein". Any albino that can hold his own against George Hamilton in a beer commercial is worth checking out, in my book.
His best collection.......2004-05-25
The best Edgar Winter collection available, partly because it includes the Dan Hartman hits from the Edgar Winter Group. Includes all the hits from the Edgar Winter Group such as Frankentstein, Free Ride, Rivers Risin, and Hangin Around, plus some of the best of Edgar Winter's White Trash. An excellent compilation.
A real blend of blues, funk, country, jazz, ..........2002-05-07
This is a record for good music lovers. You can't file it under just one music style. There are some furious blues/funk/jazz , like the first and other tracks with the 'White Trash' band , and also some more (beautiful)'comercial' songs, like Dying to Live . All material is first class, and it's a good introduction to Edgar Winter's music.
