amazing...greatness overlooked.......2004-10-13
I really enjoy this album. It's not as good as "The Egg" but it still rocks. So many cool guitar effects, I love how they dont sound like anyone. They are in a realm of their own. (sadly they have broken up since). Everything works together wonderfully on this one. My favorite song off here is "Unglued", I could listen to this song everyday for the rest of my life and not get bored with it. Quite possibly one of the best songs ever written. The little 'breakdown' at the end.. omg... it's great "his feathers melt away, the sun was out today..."!
I bought this CD on a whim..........2004-02-19
... and then played it for a month straight. Simply stated, if you like songs with dynamics then you'll love this. Buy it anyway... if you're reading this you're looking for adventure!
My favorite album.......2004-01-20
It's been a couple of years since this album came out, and I need to add my two cents about it.
I love it.
It easily surpasses The Egg in terms of sheer rock-ness. It owes a great debt to King Crimson (both 70s and 80s), although I'm fairly certain Allan Epley isn't a Crimson fan. The musicians take on heady musical concepts (metric modulation, atonal vocal harmonies, unorthodox song structures) and somehow blend them with a AC/DC vibe that harkens to the very best of 70s prog rock, but without sounding retro at all.
The musicians themselves are oustanding. Epley is a great vocal stylist; no one sings like he does. Always understated, his calm vocals seem to accentuate the band's fury. Jason Gerkin is truly a god of drumming who'd only been with the band for a couple of weeks when the album was recorded. He tackles concepts normally reserved for jazz drummers with ease, but without losing sight of his primary goal - to rock. Josn Newton (guitar) and Paul Malinowski (bass and b/u vocals) go to great lengths to broaden the dynamic range of the songs and they create the huge difference between the earlier albums and this one.
Whereas "The Egg" loses steam, this album builds to its monumental closer "Too Much of Not Enough." Like "Dear God" on XTCs Skylarking, "TMoNE" is the climax of the album, and the remainder of the album is just a cooling off period for the listener.
REMEMBER: This album is rock, but it is subtle and requires focus on the listeners part. If you like easily digestible pulp that sells millions, look elsewhere. This is music for serious music lovers and musicians; part time alterna-kids need not apply.
Not the egg........2003-07-30
This is a very good rocking album by shiner yet does not live up to the quality of other shiner releases that i've heard, the egg is the album for quality shiner however starless is also a pretty sweet release though fairly average in comparison with alot of other alternative releases and shiner releases, i picked up the egg out of chance at a record store having heard good things about the band and was literally blown away due to the lucid content and the way the album sounded better after every listen although i've rated this 3 stars it's due to it been average but it's still alot better than most the music that breathes today.
WOW........2003-04-22
After buying THE EGG and giving it a substandard review on AMAZON here, I listened some more and ended up re-reviewing that understated CD with a better rating attached. The whole situation left me more curious about the band SHINER, so I bought STARLESS.
WOW.
This is one helluva fantastic album.
Awesome, really.
