5 out of 5 stars Takes some time to appreciate.......2006-08-30

I have every Shadow Gallery album, but I must say when I recieved this one I thought booooooooooooooooooring...and it just sorta collected dust in my room for a few months. But in the meantime, I was listening to some other Shadow Gallery stuff and I really started liking Carved in Stone. Cliffhanger was well, a really great song, most people I bet agree. Cliffhanger 2, being the first song on this album, interested me, so thats how I gave this album another chance.

The tracks that stood out to me the most were Colors, Cliffhanger pt. 2, and Society of the Mind. Of course it would be impossible not to mention First Light, I mean after all, its what, 40 minutes long? Or 35? But that track didn't interest me as much, it had some weird spaces, like at some point it had maybe 10 minutes of near silence.

But overall, this album sounds pretty similar to Carved in Stone, not so much like Tyranny or Room V, I guess (or at least not much like Room V) but hey, its SHadow Gallery, check it out.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 I JUST LOVED IT...EVEN NOT INTO PROG!.......2006-06-28

Well, I'm not into prog...I love Toto...I used to love Dream Theater ("Images" & "Awake"...)...I do love Queensryche music from 80's and early 90's...There's something of each band I mentionated inside this album...but they're not similar enough to be called a clone! The very first band that came to my mind was Dream Theater...and believe it or not I do think Shadow Gallery's "Legacy" has nothing to envy to "Images And Words" (which by the way is a full 5/5 to me). The only weak song is "Colors"...it's not that bad...but it's insipid in the album context! "Cliffhanger" is a great opener with the second half of the song played as a never boring prog instrumental by fantastic musicians. "Destination Unknown" is a gem and "Society Of The Mind" simply crushing. A particolar mention goes to "First Light": I do not like too long songs, I'd say I usually hate "suites"...but this song's got something special even if its incredible length (34.38)!!! When I listened to it back in 2001 I was living a period on my own, thinking about my life, etc...I must admit this song caught the time, the feeling it creates was/is magic! You must associate lyrics to music to feel it, and I suppose this was the feeling S.G. intented to give to ppl. Words and music really go together! On the other hand I apologize with S.G. fans saying I don't like Mike Baker style very much. He didn't transmit any emotion in "Tyranny" (which is a very goog cd by the way) and the same stands for "Room V" (damn...such a long wait for such a week album!). If you do think the same YOU MUST KNOW that vocals lines and melodies in this occasion are great. Baker's interpretation's really amazing! He filled the gap...even if for only one album...sob!
In the end: give a chance to "Legacy"...it's a great album!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great album; quite underrated.......2005-06-06

This album gets beat up on by prog fans a little too much. IMO it's just as good as anything Dream Theatre put out during this time period.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2005-03-10

This album was outstanding. it might even top tranny. their songs are the most pregressive they have ever been. here is a basic review of the cd.

(key 1=horrible, 2=bad, 3=ok, 4=good' 5+great)

1. cliffhanger 2 (5) great song 13 mins long. this song is a progressive monster. the playing is just outstanding on this song. it shows just how far the band has come.

2.destination unknown (5) another great song great playing once again.

3.colors (5) another good song, a bit slower than the others. but still a good song.

4. society of the mind (4.5) this is a good song but it has a bit of 80s type vocal harmonies that can irritate me.

5. legacy (4) this song had awsome music but once again the 80's harmonys irritate me. and they do it allot in this one.

6. first light (4.5) this song is a 34 min epic. it is a great song. the only reason i gave it a 4.5 is because the first 21 mins are outstanding but 21-30 mins through the song is just complete silense, that was really pointless. but the last 4 mins of the song is a beutiful piano, keyboard melody that is really good. so it redeemed the 10 mins of silence.

in all its a great album worth every last cent paid of it, so if your debateing buying it and you like shadow gallery, or just progressive rock/metal, buy it you wont be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Shadow Gallery - Legacy.......2004-02-26

When I first heard this CD, I was disappointed. Not because it's not a good album but because it came off of the heels of their classic concept CD Tyranny. It's like when Queensryche's Empire came out, we were all a little disappointed it wasn't Operation: Mindcrime part 2. But you can't go home again as they say -- nor should you in this sense.

Tyranny is what it is. But SG has to move on. Having listened to the album again recenlty I have come to realize that they have moved on.

There are so many good things I like about this band in general. They are progressive, can do quick scales and odd time meters in spades -- but don't need to continually prove that to the listener. There are times when they just rock out a straight 4/4 riff, and there are times when they go quietly into some keyboard interlude. Whatever is needed to make a good song, this band throws out there and does not seem to be limited or intimidated by musical diversity.

The lyrics are very well written. While I can't say I agree with every opinion expressed on an SG album, I do like that they don't resort to songs about the devil, to songs about sex, or to profanity. Their lyrics have a little class, and that's hard to find these days.

They're vocals are top-knotch. Mike Baker's voice gets more interesting and mature each offering and their background vocals are supurb. This band reminds me of the best parts of Styx, Queen, blended together with DTish prog stuff. I mean, they take the best of all worlds and make their own sound.

Legacy continues this tradition. No, it's not a full-length concept album about governmental conspiracy and treason, but hey, if every CD were about that, what would make Tyranny special? Legacy has its own unique qualities and 'll tell you, having listened to it with an open mind, I like it just as much as its predecessor.

While Dream Theater's star is falling -- miserably into the dregs of mediocrity and redundency and silliness on their new album Train of Thought -- I hope SG continues to grow and expand and uplift us with their beautiful and powerful music.
