5 out of 5 stars Why anyone who doesnt like LOR is stupid?.......2003-01-24

well i believe that LOR has revolutionized the emo scene with this cd. If anyone is an intelligent person and they know there way around the block that is the emo industry. LOR used to be called a band called the Recess Theory. they were the typical emo band, AMAZING but typical. Then they broke away. and spawned and created some great emo/country rock with concerned vocals. The beginning of the cd just kicks ya in the groin with the sweet sweet sensous rock that makes you wanna get in a street fight or going riding down your favorite street with the windows down and the decibels up. and the end of the cd shows the emo side. the stuff that makes you wanna get a girl and cuddle with her while listening to this song (pick your favorite) well over-all LOR is amazing. you dont like it? you better hope i dont find out who you are and where ya live!!

2 out of 5 stars Whole lotta nothing...........2002-07-29

Well ever since the Refreshments disbanded back in 1997 (R.I.P.) it's been a pain to find a good alternative country rock CD in these parts. I mean the Supersuckers are only one band to cover all that territory. With a name like Legends of Rodeo and with a cover of 4 kids tearing it up in some dirt-floor barn, I thought thse guys were gonna be kicking some big bad americana you know, the kinda music that makes your girlfriend slide into that middle section of the bench on your pickup truck when you play it. I'm afraid this isn't quite so. I checked out the website and these guys claim to be not only a sonic revolution but a cultural revolution. I'm not so sure that the cultural revolution is going to involve an emo singer fronting an alt-country-rock band. It's definately a different concept and it's true I've never heard emo whining over some John Mellencamp kind of thing but I don't see this catching on. I feel that a lot of these songs are very strong though. Hold on Nothing is the gem of the album in my opinion. The Flags, Bartender, and Long Road are decent exercises in traditional american music. The lyrics tend to get hot and cold at times ranging from some sly well placed pieces like "The politicians just shake their hands smile and say they're doing the best they can" to some pretty cheeseball scenarios of stereotypical american culture such as the "fighting over the prom queen with your best friend" scenario in Crazy Eight. I don't mind the subject matter, I think it's cool, just don't toss it so bluntly, thats kind of boring. I digress though. A lot of the music is well created but the main thing that spoils this production is the vocals. They grow on you after 4 or 5 listens but I definately found the incoherrent emo singing to be a little much for me. I can't see traditional music fans enjoying it for that reason and I don't see emo fans enjoying it for not sounding enough like emo instrumentally. I guess the idea was cool in theory but totally lost on me. There's definately emo bands out there that do emo better than these guys and there's definately alt-country-rock bands who have done better than this. If you're looking for a good lesson in americana rock then I suggest you don't bother with this and pick up "The Bottle and Fresh Horses" and "Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big, and Buzzy" by the Refreshments. If you have all those albums enjoy them and just feel experimental then pick this one up but be forwarned, don't expect a cultural epiphany.
