Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Difficult Listen.......2005-11-14

I came to this reissue with no knowledge of Essra Mohawk, except that she has become something of a forgotten treasure, loved by fans and critics alike. I also read somewhere that her style was somewhat similar to that of Joni Mitchell and, being a huge Joni fan, i felt compelled to check this out.

So is it as great as people say? Well, not quite, though I can understand the acclaim. It's a difficult listen as there are some unconventional song structures and not many melodies or chord changes that hook you immediately. Also, I didn't particularly like her voice, though it is a versatile and powerful instrument.

"Primordial Lovers" is by far the best album of the two on this reissue and it contains the only truly indispensible (in my opinion) song here, "I Am The Breeze." It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful and captivating songs I've ever heard, a true masterpiece. Unfortunately a lot of the rest of the material wasn't as compelling for me, though I did enjoy "Lion On The Wing", "Thunder In The Morning" and "Looking Forward To The Dawn."

I couldn't really get into the self-titled album or the two bonus tracks added to the end of Primordial Lovers. It'd actually be nice if there was just a straight reissue of Primordial Lovers - this is really just a bit too much Essra Mohawk unless you have more than a passing interest.
