It's a safe bet that the souvenirs this Seattle four-piece are fondest of are the vintage albums of 1960s country legends like Marty Robbins, Ray Price, and Roy Orbison. The Souvenirs' arrangements display the same thrilling mix of honky-tonk and Nashville Sound, and, as the dozen originals on their debut attest, they have studied successfully at the feet of Harlan Howard. Just when you think you've merely dug up a beautiful time capsule, these guys turn your head with a modern touch--the crashing power chords of "So Tired of Missing You," the full-bore rock-out that concludes "Heartbroken Man"--that reminds you this is music of a living and breathing tradition. Reminds you, in other words, of a scruffier version of the Mavericks. And if these guys had a singer as good as Price, Robbins, Orbison, or the Mavs' Raul Malo, they might transform souvenirs into genuine keepsakes. Even as is, though, the Souvenirs are definitely worth lugging home. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
These guys are hot!!.......2005-07-28
I missed these guys so!! I have this album and bought it shortly after it debuted and still listen to it to this day. Cherry Lips is my absolute favorite on this album, but everything is so wonderful to listen to! I wished that I still lived over in the western part of Washington to catch their latest shows. Check out their website, www.thesouvenirs.com. Their latest single "I'm Still Missing You" is absolute heaven! You will not be disappointed!! Check them out!
Hope for the second.......2004-01-12
My agreement with reebs (see) review...but praying that nothing may happen to prevent their next album. This band is Great. The material only got better with each listen. BUT...the other excellant feature of this album is the recording itself. If you've ever wanted to put some music on, for someone, just to blow their socks off...THIS IS THE ONE THAT'LL DO IT.
The best that has never been on CMT.......2003-08-08
I think it's simple, if you like COUNTRY music get this CD. The lyrics and theme of the album echo Hank Williams. If you have a soul, the songs will move you! The beat and the tempo came from Bakersfield. If your foot isn't tappin along, there is no help for you. Honestly, this is the CD I listen to when I am heart broken and not sad about it. The music these guys play is so good, even their sad songs cheer me up. I got this CD after I saw them live as a back-up band, they are that darn good. "King of Heartache" is worth every nickel.
the real deal.......2002-09-07
This album is uncomprable to anything out today. Many people grasp at something to compare it to...ie "The Mavericks", I can't honestly compare the two other than they are the most recent of the old school country honkeytonk sound. The Souvenirs play and live the memories of those of us that are old enough to appreciate the sounds and feelings of Faron Young, Ray Price, Hank Snow and Buck Owens. To listen to these guys is to be swept back to the early days of honkytonk, disregarding the bland sound of "country music" today. Lucky's voice is powerful yet velvety and it sweeps you off your feet. The live show is even better than the CD. I am truely grateful that there are true honkytonk artists out there that don't sell out to the washed out 80's pop sounds of todays "country" music. The only thing I can say that really comes close to disappointing me is waiting for their next release. Bring on the new album! My CD is wearing out.
Cheers to the Souvenirs for holding true to the roots of country music.
an editorial response.......2002-02-16
The Souvenirs are as good as the Amazon editorial says. Better. These boys are Bona fide Bakersfield: Like Buck Owens, their songs are tight, catchy, pure electrified honky tonk, be they ballad or shuffle-beat. And Like the Buckaroos, they are one tight, rockin', modern, real country outfit, reverent to their roots, but fun and creative enough to stay fresh.
And in response to that Amazon editorial -- No, Lucky Lawrence, the lead singer, is not Roy Orbison, or Ray Price, or Marty Robbins. And Bobby Darin was not Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin or Mel Torme.
Lucky Lawrence has a beautiful, easy, dusty voice, evocative of the dusty Bakersfield sound itself. Certainly different than, and not as operatic as Raul Malo. But awesome nonetheless (My wife can't decide whose is sexier, Raul's or Lucky's). Anyway, what with the Mavericks no mas, I don't know of a better band to take their place as, well, whatever you wanna call that esteemed place. (Okay, maybe they could share that place with the Derailers.)
