4 out of 5 stars A work of astonishing depth and texture:.......2004-09-02

For about a year or two I've been frequenting Stormy Records in Dearborn, MI. One day I was bored and decided to do a Google search on Stormy Records and realized that Windy & Carl actually put out music together (which admittedly, was pretty evident by the huge Windy & Carl section at the end of the CD bin, but I'd never taken the time before to listen to any of their music previously) -- Since I remembered Windy telling me how great Fripp & Eno's "No Pussyfooting" album was, I figured that maybe their music took some inspiration from that particular style. Sure enough, I was right, but I was still floored by how polished, deep, and wide their take on the style was the first time I heard their music (courtesy of their Drawing of Sound album). I subsequently went and bought 2 more of their albums after that first disc.

I'm not sure which of their albums that I own (Drawing of Sound, Depths, and Conciousness) is my favorite, but I can certainly say that Depths is the most bipolar of those three albums, shifting from shades of tension and unease to consonance and drone across one track to the next with fluidity and precision.

I've always been a fan of breathier vocal stylings in general, and Windy's buried, echoey voice is no exception to me, particulary on Undercurrent. The instruments and vocals complement each other very well and are never overtly abrasive.

A highly recommended album from a finely tuned southeast Michigan space rock duo.

2 out of 5 stars old ideas + dumb lyrics.......2004-02-22

The massive guitar drones and loops of Depths intrigued me at first, but after a few minutes I realized this was going nowhere fast. I appreciate what Windy and Carl are trying to do here, unfortunately so many other artists have done it better that this work only serves to distract from the really good stuff. Depths could still have been a decent album if the lyrics weren't so awful. The only reason to listen once through is that the guitar loops are slightly interesting and the vocals are so overdubbed and effect-laiden that they are nearly indecipherable. If this is comparable with Windy and Carl's other work they surely do not deserve all the praise heaped upon them.

4 out of 5 stars Storm rushes from endless depths.......2001-08-09

The first time I heard a Slowdive album (Pygmalion - etherally beautiful), I was impressed by the enormous amount of reverb that was used on the guitars and vocals. Later on I experienced the album 'New Lands' on which Flying Saucer Attack drives the genre to the max. FSA, however, is less accessable given the amount of distortion that accompanies the verbie-sound. The music of this W&C CD is somewhat in between the two, easier to swallow than FSA, but not so melodic as slowdive. It's very minimal and repetitive, but it got me high really. It's fascinating how music can be annoying and beautiful at the same time. My plants also like it, I think, since they are growing more rapidly since I bought this record. My cat ran away, though.

3 out of 5 stars Still a disappointment to me.......2000-08-17

I dearly love much of W&C's work, but "Depths" has stubbornly failed to grow on me despite many listens. It has its moments (particularly the last track, "Surfacing"), but in between are too many repetitive drones that don't compare to their ultramajestic works "Antarctica" and "A Dream Of Blue", both of which I cannot recommend highly enough...
