The CD reissue of Gub and its Spoonbreakfast remix EP shows why Pigface's entrance into the world of industrial was so heralded. Brainchild Martin Atkins enlists friends like Trent Reznor, Skinny Puppy growler Ogre, KMFDM's En Esch, the Jesus Lizard's David Yow and others for a twisted jam session, giving them sanctuary from commercial restraints on his own label, Invisible. This sometimes results in useless cacophony (Atkins, a drummer, spends most of his time with Ministry's Bill Rieflin, another drummer), but at its best Gub spews out classics like the Trent Reznor-sung "Suck," which he later covered on Nine Inch Nails' EP Broken. --Liisa Ladouceur

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yanking the needle off your pop sensibilities........2003-03-03

Listening to this album for the first time is like having any of your former notions about music scrubbed clean off. And it feels good.

I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Gub and Fook.......2002-04-21

The rest of Pigface's albums have their moments, but they never got better than the two perfect releases Gub and Fook.

This music is unclassifiable, unrelenting, and utterly maddening.
I've heard that even many of the musicians who worked on this album don't like it. But it's one of my favorite albums. I could listen to it all day long... i might be insane afterwards, but i could do it.

As soon as the first 20 seconds of the pounding screeching Tapeworm have played, you'll know whether this album is for you or not. Tapeworm, by the way, is one of the album's highlights in my opinion.. with vocals by Ogre from Skinny Puppy. Other reasons to check out this album: Blood and Sand, Little Sisters, Suck, Weightless..

persons who might enjoy this album: fans of Skinny Puppy, Einsturzende Neubauten, Chris Connelly (not the MTV guy), KMFDM, Stockhausen, John Cage, Killing Joke.

If you are fans of these artists, but find that Gub isn't your cup of tea, then i recommend Fook.. Pigface's second full length studio album. It's much more 'user friendly'. If you find that Fook isn't your cup of tea either, then i suggest giving up on Pigface.

5 out of 5 stars Super Industrial Supergroup!.......2001-11-21

When I first bought this CD back in '90, I was among those that would have said it was awful. For about a week. It grows on you, fast and hard. I dispute the fact that it is experimentation for experimentation's sake; I think they went out on a limb and succeeded beyond their wildest expectations. There does seem to be a lack of structure, but repeated listenings reveal a complex rythm present in every song. Atkins is a drummer; how could there not be rhythm? He even is able to find the industrial beat of a hotel room faucet! That track is one of my favorites. Granted, the songs for the most part are not as conventional and melodic as the rest of their catalog, but, I think that's a good thing. This is a monumental stand-alone recording by a stellar assembly of Industrial superstars, the sum being greater than the parts. Original and unique in a good way.

1 out of 5 stars Hard to stomach.......2001-05-08

This CD is the bands worst. The music goes nowhere. And although the band avoids the trappings of a generic industrial sound on this disk I dont know what they were looking for. I could not connect. Buy this last if at all if you are a pigface fan. Go with Below the belt if you want rythmic smooth harmony in your industrial music. Or Feels Like heaven for a fresh aggressive approach.
