A side project from Low guitarist-vocalist Alan Sparhawk, the Black Eyed Snakes don't deliver dreamy acoustics--they're are a rock & roll act through and through. With Sparhawk as the singing ax man again, Brad Nelson on drums, and Bobby Olson on guitar, the Snakes are one down and dirty punk-blues act. For fans of bands like the White Stripes, Zen Guerrilla, and the Immortal Lee County Killers, the Snakes speed through garage blues, turning the distortion high on both the guitars and the snarly vocals. On their debut CD, they deliver five originals, four covers, and one song Low fans have probably heard before (a much quieter version of "Lordy" appeared on the Low/Dirty Three In the Fishtank CD). The covers are impressively varied; Moby's "Honey," the Fall's "My New House," and Muddy Waters's classic "Mannish Boy" are all twisted into sweaty Snakes stompers. The final song, "Cheerios on the Floor," lightens the mood a little, but overall, It's the Black Eyed Snakes is a superbly intense record that shakes with just the right amount of insane energy to deliver the blues with a volatile new edge. --Jennifer Maerz

4 out of 5 stars Watch out! The 'Snakes have bite!.......2002-10-21

Like a masterful puppeteer, the 'Snakes will bring life to your body and make it dance. Whether it's foot stomp'in or head thrash'in, you're certainly not going to be sitting still while listening to this CD. Right from the get-go with the 'Snakes original "Chicken-Bone George", the CD grabs a hold of you and won't let go. In fact, it is with their original material that the 'Snakes shine most brightly. Like bookends, the first and last tracks are polar opposites. Where "Chicken-Bone George" is a heart pumping thrill ride, the last track, "Cheerios on the Floor" is quiet, playfull and reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Seamus". And right smack in the middle are slower blues riffs equally full of distortion, steel guitars and harmonicas. If you're feeling like you've got the blues, pop in the 'Snakes and you won't be alone. In fact, if you have a Quick Time Player, you can see them play live on this disk. A true must have for your collection.
