Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Original Mephisto Walz.......2002-06-17

Lovers of good, dark music, do you have this cd? Well, if you don't, why the hell not?

Mephisto Walz has had a change in its lineup, but this is the original stuff. The sound quality isn't that hot, but the songs are. If you like good old goth music, you must have this. You can't get any more goth than Mephisto Walz.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album for both newcomers and old fans.......2000-09-08

When I first bought this album, being a fan of newer Mephisto Walz with Christianna's vocals, I was a bit skeptical about hearing these songs with male vocals. Any skepticism was quickly eliminated upon my first listen to the album. The recordings on this album actually have more life and energy than any of the band's later recordings, largely due to the fact that, at this point, the band was a full 4-piece rather than a 2 member project. Songs like "Tribal Conflicts" and "Der Sack" have more of a sense of urgency and power to them that make their later versions pale in comparison.

The quality of the recordings varies a bit due to the sources, but overall the sound is as excellent as anything else the band has released. Most of the songs that were later re-recorded with Christianna sound very similar in quality to the later recordings if not better. The only place the quality suffers is on some of the unreleased tracks which, while being very well recorded and performed, are obviously taken from cassette masters or "live" demo recordings, leaving some tape his and a bit of degredation in sound quality.

Despite the varying sound quality of the 6 unreleased tracks, they are a welcome addition to the album, especially for long-time fans of the band. "Masse" and "Dissey" are both incredible songs (and the best recorded of the unreleased tracks). The other 4 unreleased tracks consist of largely instrumental demos. Also note that "Oh Fallen Angel", another great song, was never released in the US until now.
