Album Description

Grandaddyís Concrete Dunes are the rare and critically accliamed recordings that have heralded a movement towards the groupís vintage electronic textures. The colection includes 2 previously unreleased songs in addition to 6 import only tracks plus select tracks off their debut e.p. A Pretty Mess By This One Band. Also included is an out of print gem, "Why Would I Want to Die". Concrete Dunes documents the early development of Grandaddyís evolved space rock sounds, which are further in evidence on 2000's superb Sophtware Slump.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Amnesiac............2005-11-21

Concrete Dunes is to Amnesiac as Sophtware Slump is to OK Computer. You can have Concrete Dunes and Amnesiac. Maybe both band leaders only had so many masterpieces in them. Innovative genius only sells so long before it's not innovative anymore. I think Radiohead and Grandaddy both realize that, and have to go a new direction. I always bail when that happens, LOL! It's the nature of the beast. What's the lifespan of the average band? Who can stretch it out to Rolling Stone length any more? Not these days when people want something new every week! And the artists realize this. They know they're here today, gone tomorrow!

3 out of 5 stars Concrete Dunes.......2005-08-23

Being a huge Grandaddy fan I couldn't help but buy this album. I assume anyone considering purchasing this cd already has the three proper Grandaddy LPs. If not get those first. They are all brilliant. If you still need a grandaddy fix after those buy "Broken down comforter collection". It is essentially the same disk as this missing a couple of tracks. I know what you're thinking, if there's less tracks why get bdcc instead? The reason why is that concrete dunes was released without grandaddy's permission (as opposed to bdcc) and the extra couple of tracks aren't worth selling your soul to some evil record company exec. That said all the songs are grandaddelicious so you won't be dissapointed if you do purchase.

5 out of 5 stars songs worth swallowing a little pride for.......2004-04-03

despite the evils of this collection being released without the bands' knowledge, this is quite an exception in the world of "b-sides and rarities" albums. most i have heard usually have one or two good songs and the rest leaves no mystery to why they are rare or unreleased. all of the songs on this collection are wonderful (with the exception of "sikh in a baja vw bug," which would've been okay to stay unreleased or rare), some shine more than many of their album tracks and singles. most show the bands softer side, and many tend to be sad, but there is such a warm vunerability that they don't bum you out. "for the dishwasher" is my new theme song for late night bike rides home from work, and "why would i want to die," "lava kiss," and "12-pak-599" are more new favorites to add to the wonderful list of grandaddy classics.
if you are opposed to buying an album put out without the bands' permission, do yourself a favor and track these songs down somehow. it will be well worth it. also, if you don't own the "signal to snow radio" e.p., buy it immediately...you won't be sorry.
