Customer Reviews:
PRETTY WHISPER-LIKE VOCALS,sadly not loud enough in the mix........2007-03-22
Her whisper-like,pretty soft vocals are the best and most appealing I ever heard in music, which sounds like pretty candy-girl pop.BUT THERES A MAJOR PROBLEM to this recording. The recording of her ultra-pretty-whisper-like vocals should of been much louder in volume.(not changed in anyway but louder in the mix). I found it very disappointing that the volume of her vocals were NOT AT ALL loud enough in wonderful emotional tracks like CANDYMAN,MIKE ALWAYS DIARY,ZOOM UP! and many others. Didn't the producers of this cd realize that her vocals were the MOST important element in this music and should of been considered as the lead instrument???(my heart is broken). That is why I gave this cd 3 stars.
A Fun CD.......2005-10-13
Japanese, English, and French--three great languages that go great together on this fun album by Kahimi Karie. Her whispy vocals at times stray from being ethereal to almost being grating, but the solid instrumentals backing her save the tracks when they start to wear thin. In particular, the song "Dis-Moi Quelque Chose Avant De Dormir" is a gem, and almost worth the price of the album alone.
SPANK ME SIDEWAYS!.......2005-04-10
Obviously there's some controversy here. You'll understand why when you hear her sing and even more so when you read the lyrics. In the reviews you find the devoted, protective fan who thinks it's his place to protect his dream girl who he envisions to be an angel (a touch of blind devotion). And you find those who have fallen in other directions under Karie's spell ... and have lost touch with reality. (Again, when you hear her, you will understand both ... but hopefully maintain your sense of reality and avoid becoming creepy.)
OK, here's the unbiased straight deal from a lover of all good music: There's no denying Karie's appeal. Her unique voice and style is ... well, POWERFUL. She'll make you believe in Sirens. Once you hear her sing, you'll NEVER forget her. Since I bought this CD, all I want to do is listen to her sing. She could sing ANYTHING and it would mesmerize you.
There's much more to her than simply a baby-sexy, feminine voice (although that's Way Spankin Cool too). For one, her French is BEAUTIFUL! It will transport you to a sidewalk cafe in Paris or an evening boat ride on the Seine. And the 60's/70's style European influenced music (with FunKy horns, whistles, clapping, la las, etc.) will have you thinking of a movie from that time in which a girl (with straight hair curled out on the bottom and false eyelashes) is driving her convertible along the cliff-side villages of the Cinque Terra; all in soft pastel Technicolor ... and you'll halfway expect Austin Powers to be hiding in the trunk. You'll be whistling and snapping too (you can't help it) and saying, "This is SOOO COOL!". Her English is also beautiful with the added fun of her French accent. You will smile and laugh (in a 'I Dig It' kind of way) when you hear her say "Coca-Cola" and "Burger King". And then she has an incredibly sweet side, which you hear in songs like, "The Way You Close Your Eyes" and even "Candyman" (... yeah, in some way, very sweet).
The music is equally unique. It's amazing that they (all involved) combined the various influences and Crazy sounds in a way that's a Blast, perfect for her unbelievable voice, and most of all is FRESH, FUN, COOL, and yeah - GROOVY. You can't get the songs out of your head ... even Ozzy couldn't BLAST her out of my mind! You'll be singing in French even if you don't speak it ... guaranteed. And you'll be doing Crazy dances like the Monkey and the Fists Over Your Head thing. Don't try to resist; you can't. I bet if I could play it for him, even Ozzy would start doing the Monkey with me.
The writing is also unique and is not only perfect but is the way it has to be to complete the spell. Nothing too deep, meaningful, or dramatic; but ranging from Sweet to Seductive to Crazy to Freaky ... but a perfect ingredient.
And about the FREAKY element; nothing that's gonna BLOW YOUR MIND or spank you with a steel girder. Just Cool-Fun-Freaky and just enough of "Way Out There". And there's a 60's Free-Spirited/Free-Love kind of flavor to some of it (well, more than a flavor in "LolitaPop Dollhouse"). And to that I say, "Groovy Baby!"
This is a great SOLID CD. Every song is different and just COOL! It's a great trip.

I'm a bit late in discovering Kahimi Karie, I know.
But I must say this CD sound much fresher and innovative than many of the CD's I listened to this year.
In a funny way, it sound to me as a combination of Vanessa Paradis sing to the Beatles tunes...
K.K., a Japanese native, Paris resident, sings in English-French with her thin, high whispering voice, which fit together perfectly to the melodies by her collaborators; usually Cornelius - her former boyfriend and Momus. The result is sensual, stylish, unique and pleasurable compilation.
