Seattle's Visqueen surged out of the gate with a 2003 debut that made its mark on the strength of frontwoman Rachel Flotard's nagging hooks, unaffected and direct lyrics, and engaging vocals. The second time around, Flotard tampers a tad with the earlier Visqueen formula, taking a bit more cryptic and world-weary lyrical tact while juicing up the production and instrumental attack at the expense of the debuts power-pop melodies. Like a punkier, less explicit Liz Phair, Flotard artfully explores the intricacies of relationships, albeit not always of the romantic variety. The trio mixes up the dynamic here and there, nodding to the Clash with the "Safe European Home" intro to "Manhattan" and putting on the breaks for "Houston." The changes of pace add color to a collection that's not as consistently vivid as its predecessor. --Steven Stolder

Album Description

Visqueen rolled rubber on I-5 and points in every direction over the past 2 years; playing, listening, and hyperventilating from how amazing and hilarious it all is. Experiences away from home, sleeping in different places, meeting oddballs or heartthrobs, surfaced itself in Rachel 's hands as "Sunset On Dateland." Sung like a dream you wake up with and drummed/bassed like a Ritalin withdrawal, these songs will get you. Behind the band is an all-star cast. Producer/Viper Phil Ek (The Shins, Built To Spill, Modest Mouse) brought out unparalleled performances. Producer/Grammy-in-his-closet angel Adam Kasper (Queens Of The Stone Age, Pearl Jam, Weezer) mixed the songs sky-high while stationed at legendary Robert Lang Studios.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Are you people nuts?.......2005-02-25

Am baffled by the raves! Talk about the sophomore slump. Their debut CD was fresh and every song insanely catchy. This record really stinks. Melodies, lyrics, everything. In my opinion, this one is headed for the $1.99 used bins.

5 out of 5 stars Visqueen keeps getting better and better.......2004-10-02

Between Rachel's soothing melodies and solid guitar bashing, Ben's constant drum smacking and Kim's pounding on four strings, this album can't help but grab you by your soul. After their first stellar group effort, I couldn't help but wonder if they would keep the magic alive for a second album. They did. It's as if Heart and The Clash joined forces. The depth of their songwriting is far beyond their years. They shattered all my expectations.
