4 out of 5 stars Great Warm-up to a Masterpiece album.......2006-11-14

I would go as far as to say this is a must-have companion to "Album of the Year". They are really great, sentimental songs about Kasher's struggles with his own confidence as a writer/performer/band.

3 out of 5 stars Average...for a great artist.......2006-04-17

Anything this guy puts out, solo or otherwise has a mark of quality on it, but I fear the brilliance that we see from Tim Kasher gets bogged down all to often inside the mechanics of his own creations, making his passionate crisis' sound restrictingly safe..While this is not as apparent when he is with his bandmates in Cursive, his solo project can suffer from a lack of engaging, driving instrumentation..For one man though, he is quite an anguished, creative guy. May each successive album bring him closer to the peace he hopefully sincerely craves someday, peace he has undoubtedly helped many obtain as well through displaying so acutely his own torment..By now though, torment has become as routine for this man as tea time for the brits, so perhaps a new direction reflecting a newfound positivity could do this artist's repetoire some good. After all, this is the Good Life, in all of it's non-jaded, non self-conscious glory..Funny how it is so much easier to pretend to want everything to be good, rather then to truly want everything to be good. If only we all did not pretend!

5 out of 5 stars Omaha, You Never Looked So Good.......2005-02-10

Tim Kasher once again displays his well seasoned song writing ability in Lovers Need Lawyers. The album is another chronicle of the trials and tribulations of his relationships and ongoing self inventory as an entertainer. For the Love of the Song and Leaving Omaha display the raw melodies and smooth song writing many have come to enjoy from The Good Life. But the uniqueness of this album comes from the other tracks. The album contains a sound much like Cursives, The Ugly Organ in songs such as Entertainer and Friction. The Title track and Always a Bridesmaid however carry an unusual upbeat sound for Tim that you could probably tap your foot to. This Album is a must have for any Good Life, Cursive, or Bright Eyes fan and if you haven't checked out Saddle Creek Records I encourage you to.

4 out of 5 stars And it was totally awesome.......2004-06-18

Allright, this CD is awesome my only real problem with it, is the shortness. It's not even 30 minutes long. It's deffinately worth the $9 or so you pay for it. And does this vaguely remind anyone else of Badly Drawn Boy, like in Entertainer?

4 out of 5 stars Great holdover 'til the new album in August.......2004-05-19

Maybe Tim Kasher has run out of things to say, which is why he spends so much time writing songs about writing songs. Whatever the reason, it's a point of division between those who love and hate his music (both in the Good Life and Cursive). Lovers Needs Lawyers is possibly more introspective and self-referential than even The Ugly Organ was, but if that doesn't bother you, there's much to like here.

Opening track "Leaving Omaha" is my least favorite of the bunch. It rides along on a decent riff, but lacks any real punch. Things pick up with "Entertainer," a sort of self-deprecating (or maybe just modest) follow-up to Cursive's "Art is Hard." It's catchy and fun and, at just over two minutes, far too short.

Three tales of love and lust follow. The hooky title track introduces some synths to the mix, and "Always a Bridesmaid" bounces on a wonderful piano riff. "Friction!" is an oddity, more of a rock song than we've come to expect from the Good Life (but quite good nonetheless), and somehow reminiscent of Bright Eyes' more upbeat material.

The album closes on a final introspective note. "For the Love of the Song" finds Tim once again writing about writing. For all his worry about running out of ideas for songs, it's ironic that this is one of the less inspired songs on the album. Nevertheless, it's a decent tune and leaves the listener wanting more, which is of course the point of this EP.
