Sometimes an album sets it whole tone within the first few seconds. Pinetop Seven's third release is such an album, coming to life with a slowly approaching cloud of lush melancholy. The sad clarinets and even sadder bells don't offer much hope and, like the finer albums by American Music Club and Black Heart Procession, provide a steam rush of catharsis for the emotionally resigned. Bringing Home the Last Great Strike revels in its rustic sighing, sticking mainly to traditional country instrumentation along with horns and woodwinds. It's country music in the same way that Lambchop is, not in execution but in spirit. Frontman Darren Richard's high, lonesome wails fall between his verses of discomfort and confusion; when he signs lines such as "Are you alone or cold or missing us? / And did it hurt when you died?" it's exotic and chilling. Recommended! --Jason Josephes
Customer Reviews:
Dark Americana.......2005-10-13
This is exactly the type of band you've been waiting for. Don't let the genre Americana through you off it's not even close to that adult contemporary crap usually associated with this paticular genre. It's very artsy, dark, folky and truley unique. If you like bands like 16 horsepower or Calexico or even if you just dig modern folk music check this band out right away. I have to give 16 HP and Calexico credit for opening my ears to a whole new world of music.
best album of our middle-aged decade.......2005-05-15
There are very few albums I truly love and can listen to all the way through and over and over. This is one of them.
Meandering and Moody.......2004-10-24
This music by "Pinetop Seven," seems much less Americana and more art house shoe gazer mood music. When it works it really works, like on songs like "On the Last Ride In," when songwriting skills are up front with Roy Orbison-like vocals. Other than that the mood has to strike you (or at least me) to listen to this album all the way through. It can become a little bogged down in it's moodiness.
It is a CD to listen to with gray skies, black slick country pavement, and rain and raindrops on a window, wipers put on slow. Every now and then that mood strikes you but the lead singer's vocals tends towards the Morrissey end of things and may stay up at that high octave one too many times.
Sure the music is lush. Sure the music fits a certain. Sure the music gets boring along the way at times. Sure this music fits if you want to get dressed up in pretentious black and drive around in the rain. It's not bad music, but then not too much music is. The song, "On the Last Ride In," is really worth the listen but as for the rest, it's not highly recommended.

A brilliant slice of Americana........2002-11-07
I am not a huge fan of Americana. That being said, this record is the best I've heard of said genre. Darren Richards is a talent to be treasured as a songwriter and yes, the Roy Orbison vocal comparisons are spot on. Here's hoping that this band's fanbase continues to grow and flourish, because the world is a better place with bands like Pinetop Seven. Anxiously awaiting their next record...
