Revolutionizing the Renovation!.......2006-05-23
Stereo Motion set out to re-create classic rock. The hollow guitar riffs and tinny vocals that consume the genre needed a makeover, and the one-time boy band Phat Chance stepped up to the plate and delivered a winner.
Each and every song on the album is powered by lead vocalist Bryan Nance's energetic vocals, which offers stylistic nods to Bono (particularly in "The Sweetest Sound"). The band profitted from a unique recording system which had the four members record all the instruments at once (instead of the typical process where the drums are recorded first, and the rest is layered in). This technique tests Nance's voice; forcing him to sing and play at the same time (also, he did not have the benifit of an isolated booth apart from the other musicians). Bryan excels under the pressure, though, keeping up with the wild pace and handling his electric guitar as well as anybody.
The album's highlight is the meat of the CD: tracks 4-8, and true rock enthusiasts will replay songs like "Steal the Show" (which should have opened the album as it is the most upbeat) and "Ghost" hundreds of times.
The band's Christian roots are explored in "I'm here to save you," an allegorical presentation of Christ sacrificing his life on the Cross, and Nance delivers as touching a love song as I've ever heard in "Moonlit Sky."
"Rise" was the album's lead single, and it adopts all the facets that popularized 60s and 70s rock, including vicious riffs, overpowering drums, and crooning vocals that echo ACDC's and Rolling Stones' frontmen.
The album's best song is easily the piano-driven "Ghost," which carries mournful lyrics all the way to a riveting, soaring chorus: "Sometimes it's like you're some kind of ghost, but I can't lie, you're life to my soul." The chorus is driven by guitars and drums, but harmonic violins underscore the cut, and the piano takes over the back-end, highlighting a series of "ah ahs" by Nance. The song ends with a couple of soaring chords and vocals that Bryan commented were the most difficult (out of all the songs) to sing.
"Still a Little Shaken Up" is a suitable cut on any album of this sort, and "The Revolution Times" is a rocking ballad calling for listeners to throw off the world's fashions that "are from hell."
One down point is the innovative "Slow Dance" song which tries to carve a niche with falsetto-driven vocals in which all the guys offer their voices. It's a worthy effort, but comes off as too crazy and wierd. Classic Rock purists may really get a kick out of though.
All in all, this is the best music album I've ever heard.
phat chance is gone. BRING ON THE ROCK AND ROLL!!.......2005-01-06
The Days of Phat Chance are over. Yes, phat chance officially stunk on Ice, plus they were an nsync/backstreet boys wannabe, but that isn't them anymore. Now they're a rocknroll band, and they are awesome. Buy this cd if you like classic rock and roll, AND if you don't. Even though they are a sort of classic rock, they're still very cool otherwise.
5 and a half million stars would be more like it!.......2004-08-10
OKay, as you can obviously tell, I'm a hardcore fan of Stereo Motion, and you're probably thinking, "Wow, this is going to be one of those crazy reviews where the person goes on and on about how every little thing about the band is awesome and bla bla bla." Well, I'm going to try to give it an objective view (yeah right, like thats gonna happen hehehe.) First why do I like it? 1. The guys in the band are awesome and so I'm all for supporting them 2. Eat it you criticizers- they just make rockin' music! If you like "classic" rock 'n roll then this cd is your friend 3. they have excellent drums 4. Their lead singers voice is incredible in a very unique individualistic way. I have never heard another like him. 5. They totally bring glory to God on this cd and thats like the important thing, am I right? YES:D However I have friends who are less than thrilled about this band. Fine- that's your right. Brian has a rather raspy voice, I like it some don't. Also if you just don't like this style of music, well, then you won't like the cd. Moral of the story: very good cd, but definantly not for everyone. Wow! this is a really horrible review!
