Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A debut still worth a listen........2005-09-09

This isn't Japan's best album, but it's still a good album and it's definitely worth listening to so you can hear the full journey of Japan. You may not want to get it first, but I definitely wouldn't discount it altogether and I definitely wouldn't rate it just 1 star.

1 out of 5 stars Nice package, uninteresting music........2005-08-19

There's something to be said for youth-- acts in their teens seem to be able to produce albums at a rapid rate full of energy. But one thing they often lack is execution-- the albums are often lacking in good songs, and while one or two tracks may stand out, the record itself is somewhat lifeless.

I find Japan not be any exception. Ignoring for a moment the heights they were later climb to, had they not undergone such massive transformation in the future, I suspect they would be a footnote rather than an act of some repute. A five-piece act consisting of vocalist/guitarist/songwriter David Sylvian, bassist Mick Karn, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, drummer Steve Jansen, and guitarist Rob Dean, the band's debut betrays their youth (Sylvian, Karn and Barbieri were 20 when this was released, Jansen was 18, Dean was somewhat older at 24)-- the work is highly derivative, primarily of the glam period of David Bowie's career, but also betraying a strong r&b influence. Not yet developed are the elements that would make Japan what they would later become-- Sylvian's voice sits at an uncomfortable, nasal tenor, Karn's bass, still fretted at this point, lacks the watery sound he would develop later in favor of a more funk-oriented sound, and Jansen's drums are straight rather than the atmospheric work he'd do later. To this end, the music features loud, distorted guitars, with synthesizers, so critical to Japan's later work, largely adding color in the background rather than asserting themselves.

The songs move between dull glam ("Transmission") to rather embarassing ("Performance") to totally goofy (the actually relatively enjoyable cover of "Don't Rain on My Parade"). While there's a few hints at the future (the moody "Communist China"), there's precious little here that would signal what is to come.

This reissue is rather nice, contained in a digipack with an essay by uberfan Paul Rymer and four videos included on a data portion. Sonically, the remaster is flawless, the album is crisp, clear, with none of the muddiness that infected the previous CD issue.
