SPHEERIS SURVIVES!.......2005-09-18
SPHEERIS=MAGIC=SOULFUL=ETERNAL.
WITH THE EXCEPTION OF "..TAP DANCING KID," (WHICH I FOUND THE WEAK ALBUM IN HIS CAREER AND, ODDLY ENOUGH, WAS MY FIRST)THERE ARE NOTHING BUT GOOD ALBUMS IN SPHEERIS' ENTIRE COLLECTION. I LOVE THEM ALL. I WAS IN TOUCH WITH THE MAN RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE THAT THESE CD'S WERE RESURRECTED AND KEPT IN PRODUCTION, DEPITE THE SPHEERIS FAMILY'S APPARENT LACK OF INTEREST (A CONSTANT SOURCE OF FRUSTRATION FOR HIM). IT WAS HE THAT MADE SURE I HAD A COMPLETE COLLECTION OF CD'S AS I HAD BOUGHT MANY COPIES OF THE VINYLS OVER THE YEARS (I KEPT PLAYING THEM TO DEATH). I BELIEVE HE IS DECEASED NOW (AS HE STOPPED RETURNING MY E-MAILS AND HAD BEEN QUITE ILL THE LAST WE WROTE), BUT I AM SURE HE WOULD BE HAPPY TO KNOW HIS CAMPAIGN AND DEDICATION PAID OFF. SPHEERIS SURVIVES!!
AT ANY RATE SPHEERIS WAS GREAT RIGHT TO THE END. ALL HIS ALBUMS WERE/ARE GOOD, THOUGH ONE MAY ATTACH MORE TO ONE OR ANOTHER MORE DEEPLY. DON'T MISS ANY OF THEM
Very lively for a posthumous release.......2004-11-19
I've been a longtime fan of Spheeris and eagerly awaited this CD after Johnny Pierce played "Three in Venice" on a local radio station remote. Got to say, this was the only CD in the Spheeris collection that was initially a disappointment. Read initially....
This CD was the last Spheeris was working on before his untimely death in 1984. These selectiosn are Jimmie's attempt to move into the 1980s. Still, he keeps his integrity and honesty to the listeners. When I first heard the arrangements, I thought---no, but still....I had to listen again.
You can almost hear the rain in "Three in Venice." So much of Spheeris' music clearly evokes a time, place, or feeling.
Snatch this CD up. You may not give it a 5 star rating on the first listen, but I promise you will be listening again and again.
The End of The Man- All Jimmie is Good!.......2003-03-15
Spheeris, recorded just prior to Jimmie's untimely death is the sound of a musician just coming to grips with the new sounds of the eighties decade. With Jimmie's music, you will always find honesty. This is one of his major gifts to us. On "Spheeris", he was exploring terrain he had not really treaded on before, so some of the arrangmernts are alittle ackward. But songs like his Moody Blues interpretation of, Afternoon: Forever Afternoon and the song Eyes are truer to Jimmie's standard form of creativity. My favorite is Three in Venice and Decatur Street, where he sets some ingenius musical characters. Remember the influences of that time and you will grow to love this CD as we love all of Jimmie's music. Good spin!
Spheeris Rocks!.......2001-08-02
I have only listened to these tracks on amazon but but I will find this CD.Too hot! I had Isle of View years ago. The best.Never heard this until now! I love Shawn Phillips and Jimmie both for their songwriting and lyrics! And strong points.There should be a law(because there are so many stupid ones) That master tapes should be held and stored for generation's to come! And made public to dup. for a fee.Years can and will take a toll on masters. Just as our classic films are dusting out.(Lost Horizons Sic.) The same with music, Only sooner.Also donate to Rain Records for Jimmie! Robb Trowbridge
Response to "Buy it while you can.....!".......2000-07-30
Laura Swenson's comments are pretty much on the mark regarding "Head Honchos" and "bean-counter" types in the industry. In fairness to those individuals, they simply have little choice but to be that way if they want to survive/compete in the music business. It's tough, ruthless and bottom-line driven.
Luckily, in Spheeris' case, the "Head Honcho" at Rain Records is a former band member of Jimmie's and his primary goal is the preservation of Jimmie's music. Luckily for Rain, the K-tel "Head Honcho" is equally as devoted to that goal and has pledged his company's support in distributing Rain's releases nationally to music retailers. In addition, the man behind "jimmiespheeris.com" has launched a personal crusade on behalf of this artist, that is both remarkable and admirable. The story behind the re-issue of Jimmie's music is as fascinating as Jimmie's personal story. For that, you should visit jimmiespheeris.com.
