It must be hard being a George Michael fan. Patience is only his fourth studio effort in the 18 years since Wham! split, so its release must be some cause for celebration. There always seems to have been something preventing him from releasing a new album--from arrests for lewd behavior, protracted battles with record companies, or prolonged periods of grieving for departed family and friends. Thankfully, Patience is pretty good.
Flitting between fraught ballads and up-tempo adult pop (the misguided sample-laden singles "Freeek!" and "Shoot the Dog" being the unnecessary exceptions), George here returns to the structure and mood of 1990s Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1. Patience is at its most delicate and moving with its title track, the intense, tabloid-attacking "Through" and the painful family memories of "My Mother Had a Brother." To balance this, hearts will be raised by "Amazing," with its echoes of the Bee Gees, "Round Here," in which George remembers his early days scampering around Bushey with Andrew Ridgley, and "Cars and Trains," which celebrates the kind of lifestyle that so riled the LAPD back in 1998. That's the thing about George Michael these days. Love him or loathe him, he is unapologetically himself. And fans should be very grateful for that. --Dominic Wills

Customer Reviews:
Personal, beautiful pop.......2005-05-27
'Patience' is a very deep, personal, sometimes dark cd from George Michael, his first of all new material (well not counting 'Freeek' and 'Shoot the dog') in years and years.
It is well worth the wait. You can see a lot of care and attention went into this release, including the brilliant cd photos.
The songs are largely autobiographical. 'Round here' harks back to his early years growing up. 'American Angel' is an upbeat, bouncy, mid tempo ode to his Texan lover.
'Flawless' and 'Precious box' are uptempo stompers that will get your feet moving. Deep, razor sharp basslines and a great dance beat.
The highlights have got to be the sunny, upbeat, optimistic 'Amazing', with a great line that says 'I think it's amazing, the way that love can set you free'. True.
'My mother had a brother' is another outstanding song. A ballad with very vivid, moving lyrics, full of pain and love for a gay uncle he never met; he killed himself the same day George Michael was born.
The album does take repeated plays before it's full beauty is revealed but when it does...
Fantastic!
'Patience' is indeed what one might need.......2005-05-17
I have to admit, I hated the album at first, but like others before, it grew on me. The record still stands - I have yet to listen to a song by GM that I consider 'bad.' I recommend the UK version since it includes 'Shoot the dog.'
GM fans wondering why an artist so gifted as GM is 'retiring' - listen carefully to (or read) the lyrics of the last track on the album.
HAVE SOME PATIENCE WITH IT, IT DESERVES IT*****.......2005-03-04
I think the purpose of these reviews are to inform people who are considering buying a CD by a certain artist so I will try my best not to get too over indulgent as if I'm writing a REAL review for a music magazine like some people seem to have done, so if you are a fan of George then yes you will love this CD but most fans of George dont need a review to decide if they buy a CD they will do so automatically..with that said.
If you are not a fan of George but ARE a fan of good music you are going to love this CD also, after you listen a few times you realize the album title doesnt just refer to the 7 year wait for new material but in my opinion it also refers to the Patience you as a listener should afford the CD.
As with most of Georges albums they are growers apart from FAITH which just went POW!! This one is no different, it grows and grows and grows.
Never has such a fantastic voice been recorded for public listening, this guy can SING!!!
Stand out tracks:
"My Mother Had A Brother"..the way it just LIFTS UP mid track when you dont expect it to is a stroke of genius.
"John and Elvis"..some people seem to think its about John Lennon and Elvis and why they are not around but its not...its about life and death and it makes you think about how precious life really is and makes you ponder as to wether there really is a god.
"Flawless"..the type of dance track Madonna wishes she could still make...very catchy almost infectious, with him repeating "Always The Same" in the background it just pulls you in and you wont stop singing this one for a while, massive on the dance floors everywhere without a doubt.
"Please Send Me Someone (To Love)"..awsome..not much else I can say about this one.
"Through"..I feel his pain on this one..the audience has indeed become cruel.
"Patience"..the title track is a beautiful song, just his voice and a piano,it has a subject matter that in this post 9-11 era we can all relate to..excellent.
"Precious Box"..very slick production as is to be expected from Mr Michael and very catchy too..a great tune.
To be honest you just need to listen to it and listen to it again, then and only then will you understand why he is regarded my many in the music industry(never mind his fans)as a true artist, you dont get Aretha Franklin,Elton John,Stevie Wonder,Smokey Robinson,Mary J Blige, or Queen wanting to work with you if your a lightweight, even Sir Paul McCartney once described George as "THE SONGWRITER OF OUR GENERATION"but make your own mind up.
Just buy it..you will like it,then you'll LOVE it
"I Think It's Amazing".......2004-11-02
Taken from one of his songs on this CD, I DO think it's amazing. This CD is an eclectic mix of soft ballads, pop, club style music with funk and jazz thrown in for good measure.
I personally have an extremely diverse collection of music and purchase music regularly, but for some reason, this CD has really grabbed me. Since I bought it over a month ago I can't stop listening to it! And .... I NEVER do that! In addition to the different styles of music on this CD, I love his spiritual message and his song, My Mother Had a Brother, is an amazingly powerful and heartfelt song. The music is so well engineered/mixed, that it's an absolute pleasure to listen to. Few CDs are mixed and produced as well as this one. Hence I give it 5 stars. Personally, I think he should win a Grammy for this one.
