Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good collection for its time.......2006-04-08

This collection is a good primer for those who want
to sample Sparks' output before they go back and
acquire the old LP's and CD's, or for fans who already
have the old stuff, it's a good review for the eras
it covers (the 1970's & 1980's).

The only drawback is that I bought this when Rhino
was not putting slipcases on their 2-CD sets - would've
been nice to have that as well.

5 out of 5 stars A full and just introduction.......2005-12-18

This was my introduction to Sparks, having never heard them before, and since then I've gone on to buy several albums. Knowing that much more about the band since, I can still say this the best introduction available, especially after seeing what the other 'greatest hits' collections have to offer. Great liner notes, pictures, and a couple of nice rarities. Plus, you get the benefit of getting the worthier moments on much later albums, which, if you're like me and prefer mid 70's to early 80's Sparks, you might not be willing to shell out the money for.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of their past work!.......2005-11-29

This Sparks collection is really good. It takes SOME of best songs off each album and captures them in a two CD set. I have a lot of their 80's albums, and I have really enjoyed listening to them throughout the years. I think their newer material like the albums "Balls" and "Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Voilins" are pretty good.
I would have liked have seen more songs in this collection, however, it would have required a lot more CD's!

I thought they should have been more popular than they were, given their catchy tunes, but maybe keeping a low profile in the U.S. charts has allowed them to be as creative/artistic as they wanted to be.....the sky's the limit.......no pressure to make carbon copy hits to sell records. Sparks have been popular in Europe for many years.
I've always like their odd/goofy lyrics (comical in nature) and catchy tunes like, Over the Summer (sounds like a Beach Boy's song), Looks Looks Looks(jazzy, yet pompous), Get in the swing (a song you'd hear in a parade), Sex town USA (fast upbeat tempo rockin song), Music that You can Dance to (cool beats), Cool Places (their biggest hit)........just to name a few.
Folks who recognize some of their most popular songs will appreciate how well crafted their "not so popular" songs are.
Listening to these songs for the first time will be quite an entertaining experience. A nice surprise! Nevertheless, you'll fall in love with these goofy songs like I did!

4 out of 5 stars A flashback to the 80's.......2003-06-02

I'm being forced to buy my second copy of this recording, having thoroughly worn out the first copy years ago. Having listened Los Angeles's KROQ through the 80's I was well versed with many of songs in this collection and enjoyed the ones I wasn't familiar with. Sparks is not for all, but if you're into Oingo Boingo, Devo, and the other "slightly off center" bands of the era then this will fit well into your collection.
