Reply to Nowfan35?s "NOW Needs Improvement...Now...".......2005-09-17
The reason Amarillo is featured on here, is because the CD is an import from the UK, where the song was re-released and got to No. 1.
Now 60 - not the best Now... compilation, but still good... .......2005-05-29
Now 60 is not the best Now... compilation you are likely to find, but it still makes a move, as all Now... compilations do. It features 43 top Chart Hits, and like most Now... compilations, most are good, but some are throw-away tracks (sorry). It is presented in two discs.
The first disc starts off with nine excellent songs! The artists included in these nine tracks are Gwen Stefani, Sunset Strippers, Kylie Minogue (GET WELL SOON), McFly, Nelly featuring Tim McGraw, Lemar, Girls Aloud, Uniting Nations, and Scirror Sisters. These are all great artists, and most importantly, great songs. The following tracks, by Chemical Brothers, and LL Cool J are okay, but Ashanti picks things straight back up again. These songs are followed by hits from Akon and Ciara, while Joss Stone, Verbalicious, Shapeshifters, and Geri provide great songs!! Songs from Lovefreekz, Reflekt, Kathy Brown and Styles & Breeze end Disc One nicely.
Though I am more partial to the first disc, the second disc is nice and like Disc One, there are only two songs that I don't like.
Good songs? 39 out of 43
Even though there are more songs I like on this Now... Compilation than others, this is still not one of my favourites because there were more "hits" on other Now... Compilations - and not just songs that I liked.
NOW Needs Improvement...Now..........2005-04-11
NOWs 54, 55 (especially), 56, & 57 were AWESOME! Then, things started heading downhill a bit. We've seen so much better from the NOW people. The newest installment, NOW 60, like NOWS 58 & 59, are not bad at all, just we've seen better. I think NOW 60 caught up from all those times they skipped over a lot of rock songs by making the second CD FULL OF ROCK! I mean, almost every track! Not that I don't like rock music ("Dakota" is one of the best songs here), but there's too much here! There's some pretty good dance & trance music near the end of CD 1, a good thing ("Heartbeatz" rocks), but there are a lot more good trance songs out there! I have never heard of these songs! Maybe they're new, but I think some different songs could have been chosen. The American songs on the album prove to be some of the best stuff here, and that's ususally not the case. Don't take me wrong, I like the album a lot, but it can be better.
1. Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For? (3:44) B+
The beginning of the song is...well...different, but that's a good thing. The rest of the song is a pure dance party, though I can't figure out what she's saying most of the time. What is this Harajuku Girls obsession?!?!? Nevermind about that, but this song is really good. Catchy with good music. "Rich Girl" and "Hollaback Girl" better be on future NOWs.
2. Sunset Strippers - Falling Stars (3:18) B
Most of the dance songs are a lot like this - trying to relive the 80's and not doing very well at it. Decent song, but not too memorable. Kind of like "Valerie (Call on Me)" by Eric Prydz on NOW 59...only worse.
3. Kylie Minogue - I Believe In You (3:18) A-
Nothing compared to "Chocolate" on NOW 58, but co-written by the Scissor Sisters so it's funky and good. Nice chorus - Kylie Minogue always pleases the crowd!
4. Nelly & Tim McGraw - Over and Over (3:47) B+
Before being killed by radio overplaying (they played it over and over again), this song was actually good. Some people hate the mix between rap/r&b and country, but personally I think it's a great mash-up!
5. McFly - All About You (3:07) B+
I don't get the orchestral beginning. It doesn't fit. Anyway, this song sounds like a worse and cheesier "Obviously". It's a shame - McFly is good and this is just too cheesy for them.
6. Lemar - If There's Any Justice (3:46) B
Good singer singing a song that sounds like a redone classic. Something about this song makes it sound like it was orginally written and performed by someone back in the 70's or something. Whatever. Decent song, better than Lemar's "Dance With U".
7. Girls Aloud - I'll Stand By You (3:49) B
Another cheesy ballad. Girls Aloud are good and are awesome singers, but WHY DID THEY DO THIS CHEESY SONG? I'm sorry, I just really do not like cheesy songs. I really like how it picks up though.
8. Uniting Nations - Out Of Touch (3:31) B
The beginning made me think we had another "Dragostea Din Tei", only this one isn't in Romanian, and also is not half as good. Decent, but nothing to go crazy for. I like dance music like this, though.
9. Scissor Sisters - Filthy/Gorgeous (3:48) A-
The "coolest band on the face of the Earth" keep on coming out with all of these random songs - I don't know how they flow on one album. But they all have one thing in common - THEY'RE ALL AWESOME! Scissor Sisters is one of those rare bands that never fail to release good songs. What a funky song this is...
10. The Chemical Brothers - Galvanize (4:28) B+
That intro is really addictive that it actually makes me want to listen to the song. The lyrics are wierd but a good listen.
11. LLCoolJ feat. 7 Aurelius - Hush (3:36) A-
Extremely addictive chorus that makes the song listenable. Finally, a truly GOOD rapper. I like other rap songs, but LL Cool J is in his own league.
12. Ashanti - Only U (3:07) B+
I HATE THAT RIFF THAT KEEPS ON REPEATING! It's so annoying and Ashanti's voice is the complete opposite of it. She's great, singing very well with good lyrics. She's good, the music isn't.
13. Ciara feat. Petey Pablo - Goodies (3:43) B+
If the NOW people wanted to include a song with this beat on this album, they should have chosen "Yeah!", but they didn't. Good song, but "1,2 Step" and "Oh" are better. A lot better.
14. Akon - Locked Up (3:55) B+
This is not the version of the song with Styles P's rapping, but it's still good. Akon is a great singer, but his new single "Lonely" stinks. Luckily "Ghetto" doesn't, so NOW 61 has some hope.
15. Joss Stone - Spoiled (3:36) B
More ballads! Joss Stone has a great voice, but this is a bad song. Just boring for me.
16. Verbalicious - Don't Play Nice (2:47) A
Actually, this song is really good! One of the best songs on the album, strangely. It's got me hypnotized because she don't play nice (listen to the song and you'll understand that). Adjectivilicious/Nounalicious/whatever is a really good rapper! NOW 60's Lisa Maffia (listen to NOW 55).
17. Shapeshifters - Back To Basics (3:50) B+
I like the combo of house 'n' orchestrated music with great vocals, but this song just isn't that good lyricwise. Boring, even though the vocalist has great potential.
18. Geri Halliwell - Ride It (3:46) A-
That intro sounds familiar for some reason...great trance-like song. Not such great lyrics, but Geri Halliwell is awesome - her vocals really rock the CD.
19. The Lovefreekz - Shine (3:13) B
Strange 80's-like song. I feel like this is a time capsule or something!
20. Reflekt feat. Delline Bass - Need To Feel Loved (3:15) B
Trance, but not such great stuff here. Again, great vocals, bad song. Beat is wierd...also weird that Stretch & Vern's Vern is one of the people in Reflekt - their 90's hit "I'm Alive" was really good.
21. Soul Central feat. Kathy Brown - Strings of Life (3:34) B
Poppy, upbeat, but just average song. Nothing special. Nice vocals, but just like the other dance songs on the album.
22. Styles & Breeze feat. Karen Danzig - HeartBeatz (2:52) A
AWESOME BEAT!!! Cheesy lyrics probably written by a kindergartener (the lyric "and my heartbeats like a drum/and my heartbeats, it goes boom boom boom" kills the song). Well duh it goes boom boom boom! Besides for the horrible chorus, the rest of this song is pumping! If this doesn't get you dancing, absolutely nothing will. The beat is awesome, the vocals are awesome, the lyrics aren't, but this is vocal trance at its best! A reason to get this album!
CD TWO - Let me warn you, if you don't like rock music and cheesy ballads, just throw your second CD out the window.
1. U2 - Vertigo (3:12) B+
Besides for the fact that U2 don't know spanish ("unos...dos...tres...catorces!" - it's cuatro!), this song is pretty good. This song starts off the endless tracklist of rock music. Brace yourself, it's going to be a bumpy ride on this rocky road of a cd...get it?
2. The Killers - Somebody Told Me (3:17) A-
Great new-age rock better than "Vertigo". The Killers are an awesome new band whose debut album MUST be bought to be believed. Their follow-up hit to this awesome song, "Mr. Brightside" must be on NOW 61. Anyway, about this song, awesome vocals and music, and the lyrics...well...listen to the chorus.
3. Stereophonics - Dakota (4:58) A+
BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM. Not only does it immediately remind me of summer with the awesome music, but the vocals fit the song perfectly. Personally, I never particularly liked Stereophonics' hits, but now I do! This song is rocking! Best song on the album and outdoing every other rock ballad on the album by far. Simply awesome. Another reason to buy the album.
4. Keane - This Is The Last Time (3:28) A-
Even though this feels like just an excuse to get Keane on another NOW album, I don't mind it, because Keane rocks. This song is nothing compared to their previous hits, but it's Keane! Kind of like Coldplay and Radiohead, only different - give it a listen, fan or not.
5. Bloc Party - So Here We Are (3:58) B+
Haunting guitar riff at the beginning of the song - instantly hooked me, but the vocals are lost in the music. You can barely hear them most of the time. That's a good thing, though, because the music is really good. Still nothing too distinct here, it's just another rock song on the album.
6. Athlete - Wires (4:05) C+
Nothing special here. Downbeat rock. Whatever.
7. Robbie Williams - Misunderstood (4:08) B
If "Angels" was such a big hit, then why wasn't it on NOW 60?! "Misunderstood" is just another ballad. Williams has released awesome, groundbreaking hits in the past, but this unfortunately is not one of them.
8. Ronan Keating feat. Cat Stevens - Father & Son (3:22) B
I never heard the original, but Cat Stevens returns for Ronan Keating's version. Good lyrics, but the song just isn't too memorable. Whatever.
9. Darius - Live Twice ( 3:48) B+
Good song, but Darius' "Incredible" on NOW 55 was so much better. To me, this is just another ballad, but this one actually somewhat listenable.
10. Daniel Bedingfield - Wrap My Words Around You (3:10) B-
Lately, I dislike Daniel's music. His last single was not good at all, but this is actually written by him. It's still not as good as his previous works. Just average.
11. Lucie Silvas - Breathe In (3:18) B
The vocals and lyrics may not be too memorable, but the music sure is! The introduction to the song is really catchy, but unfortunately the rest of the song is not.
12. Doves - Black and White Town (4:18) B-
After a little ballad break, the CD returns to rock. Still, nothing too special, and truthfully, I'm getting very bored.
13. The Bravery - An Honest Mistake (3:40) B
Wow, electronic! Supposed to be rock-inspired, but all I see here is a boring attempt at electronica. Same as the majority of the songs on this album, nothing too special. The music may be OK, but the vocals and lyrics just don't catch you.
14. Freefaller - Do This! Do That! (3:13) B+
Wow, something memorable! Still, nothing to great. The lyrics are actually interesting. Kind of sounds like a rockier Busted. Hey, wait, I just realized...Busted isn't on this album! What a change!
15. 13 Senses - Thru The Glass (3:23) B
Just regular rock for you. Pretty good, I guess...
16. Feeder - Stumble and Fall (4:23) B+
Feeder is Feeder, but their last NOW hit, "Just The Way I'm Feeling" was a classic, and "Stumble and Fall" is not one. The chorus is pretty good, but just nothing too great here.
17. Raghav feat. Frankey Maxx & Jucxi D - Angel Eyes (3:31) A-
Interesting...if every single Hip Hop song now didn't have Indian music, then I'd be really addicted. Wierd song, but a good one. It's a pretty good song, but I'm warning you, it's REALLY strange.
18. JoJo - Baby It's You (3:15) A-
JoJo is a great vocalist and even though her last single "Get Out (Leave)" was better, "Baby It's You" continues her success. More Indian music to accompany the lyrics, but this song is much less wierd than "Angel Eyes" by Raghav.
19. Atomic Kitten - Cradle (3:49) B
Another ballad?! Atomic Kitten are really good, but they have to stop singing ballads. "The Tide Is High" was upbeat and their best song to date. Why can't they go back to those days?
20. Brian McFadden & Delta Goodrem - Almost Here (3:48) B-
Another ballad, but this one worse than "Cradle". This is getting so boring.
21. Tony Christie - (Is This The Way To) Amarillo (3:13) B-
This song is horrible, but memorable, so it gets points. It's extremely annoying, though. Why is NOW including songs from the 70's? And they could at least include GOOD 70's songs. Bad way to end a bad second CD.
Overall, NOW 60 is pretty good with some classics, but the second CD is just unmemorable. Most of the songs seem like just fillers and one undeserving oldie. The only reason to keep the second CD is for "Dakota" and "This Is The Last Time", and possibly "Angel Eyes" to keep you on your toes. The first CD is pretty good, at least. Overall, buy the CD, and maybe you'll like the endless rock fiesta here.
CD's overall score: B/B+
SOME GREAT SONGS!.......2005-04-05
First of all, i woouldn't rate this as good as now 59! I love equally the same amount of songs on the first disc as i do on the other, there are a few good songs on disc 2 aswell as disc one. I was just a little bit disapointed because the first few songs are brilliant, then towards the bottom they seem to get more boring, not like any of the others. But all in all, i love NOW'S, so i aren't going to complain about them fully!!!!!!!!
