Customer Reviews:
another great sheena album!!.......2005-07-01
throughout her career, sheena has quietly released some of the prettiest pop music ever made; no sound but a heart is a prime example of her vocal artistry and consistency in picking great songs. sheena's vocal nuances have ranged from country crossover a la olivia newton-john; madonna-esque girlishness; and the purity of streisand. here, she successfully re-invents herself as a white whitney houston (the early years). the adult-contemporary songs initially seem sappy; but sheena's gorgeous voice brings sincerity to every word.
No Sound But A Heart and many happy fans.............2005-05-28
It seems that in the career of every recording artist there is a piece of their artistry that never sees the light of day, or at least not the day for which it was intended! The Motels' album, "Apocalypso," Donna Summer's "I'm A Rainbow," Laura Branigan's first 12" single, "Looking Out For Number One" was released from her never to be found first studio album, and Sheryl Crow's first polished-pop album was shelved in favor of Tuesday Night Music Club. So it is no wonder that Sheena Easton, who has recorded over fifteen albums thus far in her illustrious career met the same fate with her seventh and ultimately final studio recording for EMI, "No Sound But A Heart."
This recording features the crème de la crème of popular writers and producers of the era. It is an album that should have been released. Actually, it should have been released about five years later in 1992 when Sheena and the material would have found great company with the likes of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion who had followed her lead in releasing several power-ballads following the decrease in popularity of high energy dance tracks. In fact, one of Dion's first singles was originally recorded by Easton on this CD; "The Last To Know." It seems that once again, Sheena was ahead of her time. What was frustrating for Easton fans in 1987 was purchasing the poster-packaged 7-inch vinyl single "Eternity" with the b/w "Shockwave." The former clearly labeled "from the forthcoming LP No Sound But A Heart." Before it was called such, many Easton fans stalked record store personnel demanding the full LP. It wasn't until reading about her turn as a love interest of Don Johnson in Miami Vice that the fate of the record, and Easton's recording contract with EMI was finally understood. The company wanted upbeat dance tracks and Easton felt it was time to take a stand and create something from the heart. There are those of us who hunted and sought out a few rare copies of NSBAH on CD from Japan. More than a few vinyl LP's popped up in years to follow from places like Argentina and Canada that had been released prematurely.
Eventually in the late 1990's One-Way records out of Albany, NY took Easton's catalog, starting with NSBAH, carefully remastering each of her seven EMI releases complete with bonus tracks. They made the same production of Kim Carnes with many of her pre-CD era recordings.
With the exception of "Eternity" No Sound But A Heart is beautiful collection of well-crafted ballads that showcase Easton's amazing gift of vocal range and powerhouse emotion. It is easy to get lost in the mood of it all. The bonus tracks don't continue the melodic bliss, however, they are a most welcome addition to collectors of Easton's recordings.
This is Amazing and Beautiful!!!!.......2004-08-17
I went on a Sheena buying spree and went for the CDs I didn't own (most of them) and replacing my vinyl. What's up with MCA not releasing this?? After drudgingly listening to "My Cherie" and "No Strings" when this came I thought "Well, I already know "Eternity" so maybe it's not gonna be such a drag!" Well this to me is one her most consistent and listenable recording projects of her career. Her voice is in great form, the material excellent. I just wish One Way Records had included more information on the CD liner as there are really no credits except the writers. There isn't a dull track on this recording. Sheena really got short shrifted career wise. Who the hell managed her anyway?
superb.......2003-01-12
She always was and in this rediscovered album still is : the best. What a fab collection of stunning songs. And what a voice !
Curiosity cost the cat.......2002-07-27
As a major Sheena Easton fan, one listen to "No Sound But A Heart" makes it clear why this album was not released in the U.S. when it was supposed to be. Unfortunately, it WAS eventually released.
