"I'm not a star, I'm the whole solar system," professes the Januaries' Debbie Diamond on "All Systems a GoGo." The group pulls off a difficult feat: they build songs based on a '60s pop foundation that are at once delightfully kitschy and substantially meaty. A majority of the credit goes to Diamond herself. Her singing style lives up to her Bond-girl image; she's breathy, kittenish, and sexy as hell, yet blink once and she whips into tough-as-nails indie-rock mode. With a penchant for fanciful character changes, Diamond is a pastel, angel-food alter ego of Garbage's Shirley Manson, but better still, she displays a remarkable range of vocal subtleties that can only be detected through multiple listenings. The band's musical approach is plush and soft-focused yet firmly packed; it's like being hit with an enormous, velvet-covered beanbag. Their trumpet-accented, sometimes psychedelic tracks take the best from the airy musing of Saint Etienne, charge them with the fiery sex appeal of Curve's Toni Halliday, and then mold the combination into a Burt Bacharachian framework that's nothing less than utterly addictive (this music would set Austin Powers' mojo into overdrive). It's true: the Januaries are not stars waiting to be born, but a glittering galaxy waiting to explode. --Beth Massa

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Januaries.......2007-01-12

This is one special recording. The vocals are excellent and combined with the 60ish quality to the instrumentals provides an exceptionally unique sound worthy of repeated listens. It is unfortunate that the group has broken up for I believe I could become an ardent follower of their musical presentations if they were still recording.

4 out of 5 stars Bad Vibe From the Front Woman.......2006-05-21

I saw this band a few years back in San Diego, opening for Hootie. I'm not a huge Hootie fan, but I like the venue (4th & B). This chick was utterly obnoxious. She dissed the audience for not being hip enough to understand her music. Hey, Debbie you were the warm-up band, don't expect everyone in the audience to be hanging on your every lyric. Then I heard she was someone's girlfriend in the Blowfish. That made everything come together for me perfectly. San Diego is a mellow town; there are plenty of cities that would have ripped her a new one.

That being said, I did like some of The Januaries music. Enough so to download some of their stuff. (Yes, Debbie, I paid for it.) They are no Supreme Beings of Leisure, but I still listen to one of their songs... the aptly titled "The Girl's Insane."

5 out of 5 stars Beauty is not dead!!!.......2005-04-01

I was listening to 103.1 a radio station in LA ..Henry Rollin's was DJing and he played "Love Met the Devil" by the januaries..i loved the song, so i ran out and bought the CD...Debbie Diamond reminds me of Dusty Springfield "The Look of Love" meets Astrud Gilberto "The Girl From Epanema" (sp?)I was very impressed with the album, these are seasoned players, no wonder Henry praised them like he did. I remember Low Pop Suicide, Rick Boston's 1st band and this is such a big leap up for him! I'm sick of everyone trying to sound like crappy lo-fi, punk rock, fake english accent, heroin chic, mediocre-on-purpose bands...Punk did it perfectly in the 70's...been there, done that...It's cooler to
me that a band actually tries to reach a high level of perfection, and achieves it, like the Januaries! It's inspiring.

1 out of 5 stars I'd Pay For Amazon to Take it back.......2004-10-22

This CD should have been free. It's definitely the type of CD you could expect to find as a "free gift" in a bad magazine. Extremely derivitive, boring and downright tacky are just a few ways to describe this album. The "singing" if you choose to call it that makes me squirm. It certainly doesn't help the ridiculous lyrics that may have been written by a flamboyant 10 year old eastern European child. RUN!

4 out of 5 stars INFECTIOUS!.......2004-10-02

I had no idea what Debbie Diamond sounded like (or even if she could sing) until I bought the CD; I'd never even heard of her or The Januaries...am not even sure how I came across her or the band... Must have been surfing the net and happened upon their site, etc. Anyway, the lady is not only gorgeous, but has a gorgeous voice and can sing. The arrangements are terrific as well. This is the type of (Non- noisy or loud) rock album you can never tire of. Musicianship is topnotch all the way.
And I can understand why she's a fan of Astrud Gilberto (& other singers like her) because Debbie's singing sort of reminds me of Astrud (or even Chrissie Hynde )& yet, a closer listen clearly shows that she sounds and sings like noone else, but Debbie Diamond, in that she's an original.

The CD is infectious.

I'll be looking for other CDs by this singer, & hope The Januaries do another album real soon.

The only other comment I can make is I'd like to see Debbie and the band better promoted so that more people might
become aware of their terrific sound.
