Album Description

Along with ANGLAGARD, ANEKDOTEN is the most famous example of the new Scandinavian School. This trend mixes dark and gloomy influences with an extreme energy a bit in the way of KING CRIMSON on "Red" or UNIVERS ZERO. The orchestration includes Mellotron and cello (All performed by pretty Anna Sofi DAHLBERG !) and allows to turn in one second from a vaporous atmosphere to the paroxysm of frenzy. "Vemod" (1993) can be considered as a total masterpiece, and "Nucleus" follows right in the wake. A music with a rare intensity which let any listener breathless. The double-CD "Live In Japan" allows us to enjoy their live and musical performances. "From Within" (1999) shows a return to a less tough and more "anglagardian" music, still within a wonderful melancholic tension. As for the newcomer "Gravity" (2003), it succeeds in mixing ANEKDOTEN's typical style with more modern influences. That's how the eight songs on the album take you to a new direction, sometimes sweet and acoustic, even psychedelic, and sometimes atmospheric (Ala RADIOHEAD). Along with king Mellotron, you can now find the Farfisa organ, sounding very much like late Sixties tunes. Very well producted, this great album will please various audiences, and the fans will still love it. Total class !

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good starting place.......2006-11-04

This release is quite different from the first two. I think this CD would be a good one to become acquainted with this largely talented band. The reason being is that the sound is throttled- down from the all- out intensity of their earlier works, which may freak some people out if they're not used to aggresive, highly- diverse, unpredictable song formats. This is more atmospheric, mainstream progressive music with MELLOTRON aplenty. The distorted "Thick Rick" bass sound has been polished, but is still upfront ,and the overall sound is more digestable for novice listeners. It's still dark, complex, awesome music that you will never hear on the radio, but it's freakin' GREAT! I really am excited about this band, as you may notice by my recently purchasing all of their work. They rank right up there with Porcupine Tree, King Crimson and some of my other favorites. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2005-09-27

Anekdoten is a truely unique band. This album covers a lot of ground and is mindblowing from start to finish. Every member of the band is very talented. The rhythm section is top notch, and the singer has a great voice that somewhat sounds like Jack Bruce. The opener, Monolith, is a heavy, complex track with vibraphones, which really enhances its sound. Ricochet is somewhat reminiscent of "tonight, tonight" by the smashing pumpkins in the first half, but its sweet middle section brings it to new levels. The next two tracks are excellent accoustic tracks with an almost latin feel. The guitar parts are very cool. SW4 is a beautiful, entrancing lo-fi track with a haunting keyboard riff which gives me the chills every time I hear it. Gravity, the albums longest track, is top notch. The Games We Play is a shorter song, ambient and interesting. Seljak is an instrumental, which is probably my least favorite on the cd but is still a great way to bring the disc to a close. Anekdoten is one of today's most interesting bands and I really would love to hear some new material from them.

5 out of 5 stars This is not metal.......2004-02-26

This album was taken from the metal section of my usual store but it isn't metal (maybe they were before this album but I never heard any other compositions from them). I would say they are rock psychedelic and ambient.

It an easy listening album, not really focus on lyrics which are kind of poor to my point of vu (words are cold and without feelings).

My favorite track "The war is over", is a very pleasant accoustic guitar song. Second favorite is "Gravity", I like the distortion parts and the space genre it becomes. Check out the cello on song "What should but did not die".
