Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best ever!.......2005-02-19

Im a BIG BIG fan of Robin Black! I dont have much to say about this album, because i am speechless. There are no words to say how great this Cd is! you have to buy it!

5 out of 5 stars the new bar by which rock albums will be judged.......2005-02-17

As a huge Robin Black fan, I may be biased in saying this, but this is THE album to buy if you are to buy one album this year.

The hugely anticipated follow up to 2002s Planet Fame doesnt disappoint. It is full of the same Robin Black you know and love, but they bring many different things to the table this time. Better songwriting, better production, and a better album than the last.

Of course the band lineup is different from Planet Fame. With Planet Fame's release in 2002 the band was called Robin Black and The Intergalactic Rock Stars. This band was made up of Robin Black on vocals (of course), Starboy Chris Cunnane on rhythm guitar and synth and backing vocals, Killer Ky Anto on bass guitar and backing vocals, Kevin K-Tron Taylor on drums, and guitar god Spacey Stacey Straye on lead guitar.

Stacey Straye was the first to jump ship because the band "wasn't his thing" anymore, and the band let him go amicably. This was proven when I bumped into him at a recent Robin Black show - they still talk like best friends, and in the Instant Classic album liner he is thanked.

Instead of finding a new guitarist, the IRS pulled out their secret weapon, Killer Ky, and put him on lead guitar and his position of bassist was filled by Brent BB McQueen.

Both BB and K-Tron jumped ship before writing for Instant Classic. Their positions were filled by John the Creep Kerns on bass and Chris Alexander Kidd on drums. The IRS moniker was dropped and the new band was born.

So let the review begin!

1. Why dont you love me: A great album opener. Heavy Guitar, sing along choruses, great guitar solo. Probably will be released as a radio single. A must do song for the live show.

2. We saw right through ya: The kind of song you expect to hear from Robin Black. It could have easily been on Planet Fame - but that is in no way a bad thing. If they didn't stick to this format of writing I'm sure they would lose alot of fans. A great song with a fun chorus.

3. Hellraiser: My least favourite track on the new album. I don't know if its a cover or a song writen by a songwriter. Either way its an okay song. Definately not great though. The only thing that makes it really fun is the fact that Starboy puts on an english accent for his backing vocals. I hate the horns on it though.

4. Better off that way: There are so many great songs on this album. As much as I love it, it sounds too... Brittish, for me anyway. Its jjust the chorus that I'm not as fond of, but its is still an Amazing song. Ky's guitar tone on it is sooo cool.

5. Over You: HUGE CHORUS. Over You is the first single off the album, and a great first choice. It is a fun song, cool lyrics, Fun Chorus and a really cool guitar solo. Rock n Roll doesnt get any better. The phrasing of the guitar is amazing. This song is a great song.

6. Seventeen: This song is a very original song in that Starboy is singing co - lead vocals on it. It sounds very different from anything they have done. The song has great production and a fresh feel. Starboy happens to be a better singer than Robin Black. I'm suprised Robin didn't feel threatened by him. The song evn has a strange break at the end. It very well may be my favourite song.

7. Feel (Something so real): Am I allowed to have two favourites? This is the song I was dying for when waiting for this album to come out. They play it live all the time, and it is just a great song. I love the chorus, I love the lyrics, I love everything about this song. Its amazing how heavy a pop song can be. I love the production on this song. The heavy parts feel as heavy as any Hardcore band, and the chorus sounds as clean and poppy as a Beatles song. Awesome song. This song will set you free from what you see.

8. This one's gonna hurt you bad: This song is reminiscent of Planet Fame in that it sounds like it could be one of the hidden live tracks. It is a fast heavy song with really agressive lyrics. I love Robin's yelling in the verses. Ky's playing is very Slash on this song, and it suits it so well. Ky really is the bands secret weapon, and I'll explain more on this later.

9. Shoot Em up now: This was the B-side on the Over You single. I already know how to play this one. Its awesome and so catchy. Sometimes I wonder if this should have been the single and Over you the B side. I love the backing vocals on this song. Live this song is so energetic, it gets the whole crowd screaming.

10. Outta the city: This song sounds like it could be on Crash Kelly's Penny Pills album. Again, that is in no way a bad thing. It has a real Guns N Roses feel to it. Its very bluesy and has very Slash like leads. Ky can basically play anyhting in any style and still make it fit the Robin Black Equation. Ky Doubles his lead guitar solo for this one, and if there is one thing I love its doubled leads. Awesome playing, awesome singing, awesome backing vox, amazing song. Period.

11. Lullaby: Here is where Ky demonstrates that he is the bands secret weapon. This song is a piano ballad where Ky plays the piano backed only by a symphony. Robin's singing is very Pink Floyd on this track. His singing is so souldful and ful of emotion. And people say this boy cant sing. He proves them all wrong on this track alone. This is the albums closer, and what a beautiful end.
