Overlooked and Ignored...But Classic.......2004-09-04
Paul Revere and the Raiders were considered "has beens" by 1970, swept away by the harder-edged rock of Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Doors, The Beatles and others. Collage was Mark Lindsay's response [or statement if that sounds better] to what was going on and it earned praise at the time. The opening song, Save the Country, is a great rendition of Laura Nyro's fine song. Just Seventeen is, well, a classic. There are many others.
Unfortunately, the album did not sell well and it was out of print before long. Columbia had clearly given up on the Raiders at this point and made little effort to promote the album. Too bad. Indian Reservation came out a short while after Collage and it was a huge hit. But it marked a new course for the band. Mark Lindsay put his full energies into a full-time solo career that had mixed results. Collage was tossed on the vinyl scrap heap of time. Thank goodness someone has finally seen fit to release it on CD.
A Big Move..........2002-05-01
"Collage" moves this band from fun pop hits to showing off it's virtues as a strong rock band. The depth of the group comes across in a recording that deserved far more publicity and credit than it got at the time.
The album includes a couple of re-makes of previously released songs, showing what a tremendous difference a new arrangement and and different production techniques can make. Other songs on the CD show a variety of styles, from hints of country and ballad in this basically rock album.
Mark Lindsay shows off his strength and vocal range with a variety of styles. He wrote, or co-wrote many of the songs, and also produced the album with results that were innovative at the time, and just as exciting to listen to now.
It's a true "collage" as one track blends and bleeds in to the next taking you on a very interesting emotional ride!
Listening to it now, you can easily get into all of the tracks, as well as see the progression and development of rock music as it was happening at the time.
A vibrant and exciting CD, and a "must" to add to your collection -- for any fan of rock music!
A Sonic Masterpiece.......2002-04-24
Just as Sgt Pepper was to the Beatles, the album Collage was the artistic peak for PR&R. It was lead singer Mark Lindsay's masterpiece, as it was he who was the mastermind behind this "tour de force". Even the bastion of hipdom & counter-culture at the time, Rolling Stone Magazine, gave this album a glowing review upon it's release in 1970, and praised Lindsay for his efforts. Forget the pop sounding singles that immediately preceded this album : Led Zeppelin & Uriah Heep come to mind, when one spins this CD. Each track has been so exquisitely arranged & executed. Nothing seems out of place. Nothing seems lacking. Brilliant. Simply Brilliant. Definitely number 1 on my "desert isle" classic list.
