4 out of 5 stars .this is a beautiful,sleepy grower.......2007-04-21

Of course i got this as ima big wilco fan, and own a record store of my own...ive also found that i love the stuff john stirrat does on his own,, from his one solo vocal spot in wilco( the awesome " RIPPLE " on AM) BUT I FOUND MYSELF FALLING ABSOLUTLEY IN LOVE WITH THE autumn defense ALBUMS TO..AT first this sounds like a nice, gentle, simple little album of sweet country, singer songwriter stuff, but after listening to it on and off, here and there during the year i have now found myself in love with it...as i have also found myself loving the AUTUMN DEFENSE records....highly reccommeneded

4 out of 5 stars To Jim.......2006-01-16

Jim from Brooklyn,
Laurie and John are twin siblings. John is one half the Autumn Defense. He is also the bass player for Wilco. He is, outside of Jeff Tweedy, the most loyal member of that band. Laurie was in a band called Blue Mountain. Both of these people have been around for a while. Maybe this isn't your cup of tea, but your idea of who these two people are is way off base. Hope no one got the idea that Laurie and John are married newcomers, not nearly as talented as the other bands of which they are founding members.

1 out of 5 stars Sometimes simplicity really is based in inemptitude .......2005-10-21

I bought this CD because this band are labelmates to Hem and The Autumn Defense. I assumed that they had to be great too.

Boy was I wrong. This CD is just bad. On some songs, the lyrics are absolutely awful, like bad rhymes from a high school student. Here's a sample:

"I - saw her yesterday-hay

It was in a dream - I asked her if she could sta-hay"

and the song goes on like that with the annoying "Hays" for like 5 minutes. The CD is comprised of songs written by the two members - Laurie songs and John songs. It's like a split CD - one half is awful (laurie) and the other half is just boring (John).

The female vocalist should not sing lead - her vocal quality is totally amateur and annoying. "Laurie's" songwriting is awful too, and her performances just aren't worthy. I guess they're married so he has to let her sing or John will be sleeping on the couch!

The male vocals are OK, but don't have a whole lot of emotional content or any real range. Neither of these people are great singers, although "John's" songs have more craft and art to them. Don't get me wrong, they still aren't that great.

The instrumentation is pretty good - in fact as a whole, if these tracks were instrumental, I'd be giving the CD a much better rating.

On a whole, this is a lush sounding record, with songs that go nowhere, sung by people who are grade C vocalists. If you buy this CD thinking you'll uncover another treasure like Hem, you will surely be disappointed.

OK, the whole Americana thing is about simplicity. There a fine line between simplicity and bad songwriting. All the ingredients are here, but once you take a bite of the cake they baked, you'll put down your slice and won't take another bite.

5 out of 5 stars Not wilco, but excellent.......2005-03-06

This amazing album will always draw comparisons to Wilco for obvious reasons. It's an entirely different sound, but amazing. I recommend it to any wilco fan, or anybody who is interested in hearing some great laid-back countryish music. No, it's not as amazing as Wilco, but it's definitely worth your time to listen to it several times.
