4 out of 5 stars Too much of "The Ladder".......2007-03-10

This is a good double live album from Yes, but there is too many songs from "The Ladder" Two songs would have been OK, my choice would have been "The ladder" and "It will be a good day" This way we could have some other songs from some other studio album. Overall, a good cd again.

3 out of 5 stars intimate concert, and yet ..........2005-03-05

i must disagree that the sound quality, as some have expressed, of this recording is "horrendous". the discs have their charms, and the price is right for a two disc set. the sound is decent enough if you keep in mind that it was recorded for radio broadcast and was not meant to be an album. i suppose record company big wigs thought, 'hey! let's release this and squeeze some money out of a band that doesn't sell much anymore!" there are snippets of "time and a word" and "ritual", but anyone who can read would know that by looking at the back of the cd case. perhaps if you are only researching this on the web, you might be fooled.

i think the title is worth hearing. if you buy it thinking that it is representative of the band, then think again. they've never really released a representative live set (except, perhaps, 'yessongs') but the title does fill a certain void. anyone who complains that too many songs from 'the ladder' are included should have their head checked. the discs document the tour that supported 'the ladder', after all.

sorry to disappoint yes elitists, but i think the highlight of the two cd's is the mix of 'cinema' and 'owner of a lonely heart'. for some strange reason, most yes fans detest the trevor rabin version of the band, but i feel that he gave the band a kick in the pants and helped them retain some longevity. without him, i believe that the band would have simply lived on as 70's dinosaurs and would be nearly forgotten in 2005. unfortunately, they seem to be creeping in that direction anyway.

buy this. the price is right and the concert is enjoyable. it isn't a classic. please put on 'edge', 'fragile', 'the yes album', or even 'yes' if you want that kind of fix. if you want to hear a few old codgers adding to their retirement funds while having a good time as well, play this. i don't think you will be disappointed. if you are looking for something more, well, i don't think you'll find it here. in fact, if you want yes to release something truly amazing and different 36 years after their start as a band, then get real. if you are under the age of 36, then you don't have the perspective on their career and its context to be able to make any objective remarks. don't despair! i'm one of you.

peace.

4 out of 5 stars no Kaye or Wakeman.......2004-03-31

This is not a bad live disc. The sound is decent and it's all one show instead of different shows. Sure, you can find millions of live versions of I've Seen All Good People and Roundabout on other live Yes cds, but somehow, even though there's no Tony Kaye or Rick Wakeman, this cd is worth the money. I feel ripped off, though, because the song 'Hearts' was performed at this concert and they did not include it on the cd or dvd. WHY? That's one of Yes' best songs ever! From what I hear, Billy Sherwood sang Trevor's parts, and Steve Howe did the closing Guitar solo with the slide guitar. THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED ON THE CD AND DVD!!! Anyway, this is a good show that all Yes fans should have. If you're not too familiar with Yes, then you should also try this cd out. It does have their big hits that the non-Yes fans have heard on the radio or whatever. Plus it has a few songs that non-Yes fans have never heard that they SHOULD hear, like Perpetual Change and Awaken.

3 out of 5 stars Sound [horrible]-Could have been one disc...........2003-08-25

Hey kids! I am new to yes. I got into them about 3 years ago and picked up 'House of Yes' to round out my collection. I didn't really care for the Ladder, but liked hearing the tunes live on the video. Unfortunately, the sound on this cd [is horrible]!! I should have read some Amazon reviews before I bought it because most reviewers mention the less than stellar sound. The sound is muddy and tinny with too much treble. You can hear the bass lines, but there is not bass. Finally, Howe's guitar is buried. You're waiting for him to bust in on 'Yours is No Disgrace' and it's not there!!
The other problem is the song selection. The 1 minute version of Time and a Word is ok with me since I don't care for that tune, but what's the point of hearing 1 minute versions of Ritual? There are too many Ladder songs, but this makes the disc different from other live albums by Yes. The Messenger and The Ladder do well live and you get to hear K go off a bit on the keys. It's also interesting to hear Awaken in the small venue like the House of Blues. And, Perpetual Change in the late 90s is a must have as is the rare Cinema.
So, buy at your own risk and get ready to mess with the equalizer when you play the CD. Keys to Ascension I, II are recommended if you even slightly dig this disc.

3 out of 5 stars A live album with a few errors.......2002-06-24

Well, here they go again! Yes has released the majority of these tunes at least 2-3 times over. Don't get me wrong, even though the versions of songs like "Roundabout," "I've Seen All Good People," "Yours Is No Disgrace," and stuff are played very well, it would've been nice for them to play something a little different for this show they played on Halloween of 1999.

First off, there a few errors that need to be pointed out. When you go a record store to buy this, one of the stickers on the case says some of the songs it includes, something like, uh, "CLOSE TO THE EDGE?!" That song was nowhere in sight on this live album, even though it would've been nice to hear it played. Also, on the personnel listing, it goes as follows: Jon Anderson - Lead Vocals (instead of lead vocals, keyboards, and percussion, which he did on the video and dvd of this release); Steve Howe - Lead and acoustic guitars, steel, and vocals; Billy Sherwood - Guitars and vocals; Chris Squire - Bass guitars and vocals (instead of bass guitars, harmonica, and vocals; Alan White - Drums, percussion, vocals (which in fact, he does not sing backup at all at this concert. Hell, this past year's YESSymphonic Tour was the first tour he sang backup on since the 90125 Tour.); Igor Khoroshev - Keyboards and vocals (instead of keyboards, percussion, and vocals, which was the way it was seen on the video/dvd.)

Now, There's another thing that really bugs me about this show. For some odd, insane reason, there was only a one minute-long version of the 22-minute epic, "Ritual," being performed, which was just a brief duet with Jon and Igor, also on a snippet of "Time And A Word." I could just imagine what it would have been like with the extended intro, the vocal parts, the instrumental (Jam) mid-section, the thunderous percussion interlude, and the beautiful song finale. It would have been nice to hear that again, but instead we get a snippet of the finale.

The sound quality of this release, both CD and video/dvd, is horrendous. The mixing was terrible. Chris's bass hardly had any bass to it at all, and the vocal harmonies did not sound that great. Overall, the album sounds pretty undermixed and underproduced.

There were actually some really great moments, though. Like a suprisingly great version of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" with Billy Sherwood being the lead guitarist for this tune, seeing is how Steve Howe despises anything Trevor Rabin did with Yes. Hell, for the "Symphonic Music of Yes" album, Howe and the orchestra really kicked the song to the curb and played it like they didn't have a care in the world what it would sound like. There also an extended jam session at the end of it for a change. Also, some great moments from "Homeworld," "Perpetual Change," and "Roundabout," even though this song has had to be played at every single show on every single tour since it first came out on "Fragile" back in '72. There's even a jam at the end of this song as well, with a highly climactic finale.

The band really needs to get off of the same old songs that they play on every single tour. This also goes for a live album! Yes really needs to release some different, new or old, live material. Wouldn't it be nice to see a live album consisting of the following: EXCERPT FROM FIREBIRD SUITE; SOUTH SIDE OF THE SKY; ON THE SILENT WINGS OF FREEDOM; THE REMEMBERING; SOUND CHASER; INTO THE LENS; HOLD ON; CHANGES; the two unrecorded but performed songs from "Drama" which are WE CAN FLY FROM HERE and GO THROUGH THIS; RELEASE, RELEASE; COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW; different versions of PARALLELS; WONDEROUS STORIES; LONG DISTANCE ROUNAROUND/THE FISH; and THE GATES OF DELIRIUM? I think that would be a very unusual live album, but at least something worthwhile and different!
