WONDERFUL MEMORIES.......2003-09-07
This a good collection of soft rock and pop from 1971 although the omission of Carole King's It's Too Late is a pity - it spent many weeks at No. 1 that year and is a perfect example of the soft rock style of the time. I Am I Said is one of my favourite songs by Neil Diamond, a lament about being torn between New York and Los Angeles. If by Bread is a slow, gentle ballad but She's A Lady by UK artist Tom Jones isn't particularly soft at all, more like power pop in his booming voice. Me And You And A Dog Named Boo is a lovely country number and Put Your Hand In The Hand is an engaging gospel number with a propulsive rhythm. Watching Scotty Grow by Bobby Goldsboro is a pop country number similar in style and mood to his huge hit Honey, whilst Aint No Sunshine by Bill Withers is a lovely soul song. This is an excellent compilation of melodic songs that will bring back lots of memories for those old enough to remember.
Ho-Hum collection.......2003-01-21
One more in Rhino's Billboard chart-oriented, year-by-year compilation discs, this one featuring so-called soft rock hits from 1971. Each of the tracks here were top-five on the Adult Contemporary charts that year and made some noise in the top-100 singles charts. For a reissue CD, the track count is stingy, but that is the format of most of these Billboard collections. Sound quality is overall very good and there is a little backround on the included tracks in the liner notes booklet. Nothing special here, but if the soft-rock sound of these tunes interests a prospective purchaser, this is a safe bet. For anyone other than the most casual listener, there is not much of interest here other than possibly Engelbert Humperdinck's "When There's No You", a tune not often found on CD elsewhere.
