An album title like This Is Rock 'N' Roll doesn't exactly promise grand artistic ambition and high concept. Still, give the London Quireboys credit: the title emphatically delivers on its promise, however modest it may be. These Quireboys actually date back to the mid-1980s and coulda been a contender for the blues-and-boogie-rock crown that was eventually grabbed by the Black Crowes. Singer Spike Gray reconvened the band at various points and in various incarnations throughout the 1990s, but This Is Rock 'N' Roll marks the band's first new studio full-length in nearly a decade. For fans of unadulterated, unhyphenated rock with catchy hooks and thick riffs, you could certainly do a lot worse than this bunch. Sure, they sound an awful lot like the Faces--Rod Stewart rasp and all--with a touch of Mott tossed in, which will no doubt earn them cries of "Derivative!" from snootier folks, but that is their loss. As Spike himself belts out, "Y'know it's a travesty when ya just can't sing along." Amen. --Marc Greilsamer

it can't just be rock and roll can it?.......2006-02-05

this is my first album by the quireboys so really i can't judge this album on any standards of the past, too me this just sounds like a new fresh faced rock and roll band slogging their guts out with blistering solo's growled vocals that could damaged you and deep lyrics that struck a note with me
i've heard from a dealer that he said that their early albums are better..but this is a superb album done to the brim with massive songs and just produced just right it's magnificent
you need this album if you like your rock raunchy growly and with a hint of the blues..
well what your waiting for?

Third Album Lacks Nothing.......2004-07-01

This was the album that the Quireboys probably always wanted to record. It's not over produced and it showcases all of the bands strengths.
The title is a bold statement to make, but The Quireboys did it. They showed everyone what rock n' roll sounds like in case they'd forgotton. And judging from what tends to be played on radio and MTV these days, they have forgotton what rock n' roll is.
This album is a rare gem in that not a lot of people I know have ever heard of the band. But I have on more than one occasion, won the band new converts. It ain't their image, it ain't their marketability, and it ain't from their being shoved down the publics throats. This band wins new converts with their kick ass no b.s. approach to making rock n' roll (it would be nice to see the Billboard Top 40 jackasses try that for a change huh?)
The line up of the band is different than that of the first two records (A Bit Of What You Fancy, and Bitter Sweet & Twisted) but they have lost nothing. It took them nine years to release this third outing and it was well worth the wait.
The set starter is the title cut "This Is Rock N' Roll" and the title says it all. You listen to this song and you think in your mind "I'll be just fine in the arms of this band."
Next is the cool rhythmic swagger of "Show Me What You Got." The only thing I wish they would have done with this one is written some more lyrics for it. It is a bit repetitive lyrically, but all that is remedied by the killer musical arrangement and of course the piano at the end.
From there, the boys get to flex their muscles with one of their greatest strengths...a ballad. "Searching" is like many of the Quireboys' ballads in that it has a catchy chorus and excellent soulful lyrics.
Next is "Six Degrees" which I thought was a bit different than some songs they might have done in the past. It took me a few spins before I really liked the song, and now it is one of my favorites on the album.
"C'Mon" is classic Quireboys. Very much in the same style as their older songs "Misled" or "Long Time Coming." And of course, another catchy chorus.
Next up is "Seven Days." You won't find a better Quireboys ballad than this. This definitely has the influence of the Faces written all over it, but the Quireboys have never been all that shy about wearing their influences on their sleeves every once in a while.
"Taken For A Ride" is next and it has a bit of a different sound too, but comes right through on the chorus.
Same can be said for "Coldharbour Lane" which is now my favorite track on this album. It doesn't sound musically like a traditional Quireboys song but it has a catchy chorus and I just really dig the music. Very cool song.
Then the Quireboys take you back with "Turn Away." It's classic Quireboys soud through and through. Just good old fashioned rock n' roll.
"To Be" definitely stands out on this album as the bluesiest song. It has a slow blues feel. The closest of their older songs to this would probably be "Ode To You (Baby Just Walk)" from their second album.
From there the boys give you another ballad titled "Enough For One Lifetime" It is probably my least favorite of all the ballads on this album, but it is still a great song.
Next is "It's Alright." This song was not by any means bad, but is my least favorite on the album...all of their albums have had them for me...The first album had "Sex Party" which I thought was a bit of a silly lyric. And Their second album had "Wild,Wild,Wild" which I loved the music but hated the lyric. But back to "It's Alright." I do like this song better than the two I liked least from their two previous albums. There...enough said about that song.
And finally, the set closer and one of the ass kickingest songs this band has ever done, we have "Never Let Me Go." This again borrows from the Faces a bit, but I don't think the Faces ever did the Faces quite this good. Just a great real rock n' roll song.
If this review hasn't sold you as a true rock n' roll fan on this album, then I have failed at conveying to you in words what a great album this is. This is timeless music that sometimes sounds as though you'd have been spinning it on your turntable right smack dab in the middle of the 70's. The only thing missing is the background crackle of the vynyl on your hifi system..."Keep Truckin."

One of the best rock albums I own by one of my top 5 favorite bands ever. I hope you buy it and if you do, you owe it to the world to turn everyone on to it that you can. I guess I'll get off of my soap box now.

True musicians.......2004-03-29

This cd is phenominal. This band really writes great songs, has great musicianship and Spike has a great voice. I am always shocked how this band does not get the credit they deserve. IF you enjoy true rock n roll then purchase this cd. It will not leave your player for a while. The best song is 7 days, but they are are all truely exceptional.
