5 out of 5 stars What a nice shock!.......2006-11-03

Who knew! I'd call this kind of a QOTSA meets the Strokes kind of thing. I had never heard of them and bought the CD on a flyer based on some stuff I read on the internets. I was using the google and thought this might be good. I didn't get it on a big truck, but rather a series of tubes. More accurately I used the tubes to get a big truck to bring it to me. But that's not improtant right now.

What is important is how hard this CD rocks! I really like grunge and such and I love the Foo Fighters and QOTHSA. I'm also into The Strokes, White Stripes and that kind of stuff. I'm a rock n roll kinda guy. Well this band kind of plays to both of those styles. I'm really digging it! Best tracks are "Tough Girl" and "Take No Action". I can listen to TNA over and over. It just rocks!

Ok, bit of a thin review, but buy the danged thing!

4 out of 5 stars Open Hand..........2006-07-09

This release by Open Hand on the Trustkill label is an extremely well-written record. Although I find the album has a few weak spots it is still a great CD and what I love about Open Hand is that it is hard to group them with other bands. They obviously don't fit in with their label mates who are mostly hardcore/emo bands (It Dies Today, Fight Paris, etc.) They are just a rock band and don't fit in under most genres.

That being said, the strong points of this album are the amazing melodies showcased on some of the songs. The singer's voice, when used to potential, is extremely grasping. The melodic songs on this album are by far the best and these would include Crooked Crown, Jaded, The Ambush, Trench Warfare, and the Kaleidoscope.

The second to best songs on this album would be the more traditional rock songs. These aren't exactly melodic or have minimal melodic parts but are either more fast paced or not as emotional feeling but good nonetheless. These would include the songs Tough Guy, Pure Concentrated Evil, Her Song, Tough Girl, Hard Night, and You and Me.

Now with three tracks left, these just don't realy fit into either of the categories I mentioned. NewSpeak is a strange song that isn't all that grasping and seems like a weird little filler. The other two, Waiting For Katy and Take No Action just completely divert from Open Hand's original sound and IMO are terrible songs. I think they both feature a female vocalist even though the voice sounds like a guy to me so I'm not too sure where they were trying to go with these two tracks.

Overall I really like this album because it is creative and can be emotional at times. The two outstanding tracks on this album that I could listen to over and over are Crooked Crown and The Ambush.

There is a secret song on a foreign release of this album called Elevator that is the last track. This song is actually really good and I don't know why they didn't put it on the regular record. If you can somehow get a hold of that song I suggest you do it is a much better final song than Hard Night.

1 out of 5 stars because i cant rate it a zero.......2006-05-04

This CD sucks. if you have heard what their other cd (the dream) sounds like then you will understand. there are bands out there that as they write new cds their sound changes slightly and it may be better or worse. this cd sounds nothing like the dream. I have heard that the only original member of open hand is the singer. he should have came up with new band name and not tarnish what was Open hand. you may say "you are living in the past." well i dont care i want the open hand that came with further seems forever and blew my friggen mind. I want the band that is a staple in my music diet. Not a band that passes its self off for a band that was great.
