Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful Warbling Voice!.......2006-10-13

I was listening to Yahoo's music radio and the I want be your Everything song came on. I had to look and see who was singing as it was so horrid! His voice seemed to warble and crack at every turn. I can't believe he is a professional singer. It sounded like one of those dreadful American Idol auditions.

5 out of 5 stars Tommy is amazing!.......2006-08-27

He was a young guy when he wrote this album. He's an amazing song writer both lyrically and musically. I highly recommend this CD and all his others!

4 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated artists.......2005-09-30

I thought that Tommy Page made a good pop album in Paintings on My Mind. Although he had a strong teen fan base in 1990, this album succeeds on its own merits. He has a good balance of ballads and danceable numbers. Jordan Knight wrote one of the songs here, but the song fits well with Tommy's voice. Page was one of the most underrated singers of the early '90s and this album made him a little more accepted.

4 out of 5 stars Tommy is great!.......2005-06-04

I have owned this record for over 10 years now! I listen to it on a real regular basis. I am into ballads, so this fits my type of music...

2 out of 5 stars Very generic radio pap with spineless singing........2005-02-19

My older brother (yes, believe it) played this record over and over back in the early '90s, so much so that I almost memorized every sound on most of these songs. Unfortunately, familiarity doesn't really make this music any easier to swallow.

I was reminded of this one-hit wonder today when I put on Jane Child's eponymous debut album. Child's "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" was kept from the #1 spot in Billboard by Page's "I'll Be Your Everything", and today I can't help but grin -- whereas Child's synth virtuosity and sophisticated arrangements still burst out from the speakers, Page's "I'll Be Your Everything" sounds every bit as bad as any New Kids on the Block ballad ever recorded. Page was allegedly "discovered" by the New Kids and Jordan Knight, the New Kid with the most insufferable voice, supplied backing vocals on "I'll Be Your Everything". It's the kind of song that makes Phil Collins sound edgy. The title track "Paintings in My Mind" is even worse, where Page's skim-milk voice blandly recites the notes as if in a singing class for the first time, and the lyrics are almost degenerate in their drop-dead boring genericism.

Why two stars, then? There is one song on here that, even today, I would have no problem admitting that I like: "Don't Give Up on Love", a duet with early-'90s dance starlet Safire. Safire's overwrought voice actually conveys a lot of gusto, and Page's even-keeled, boyish croon weaves with her very nicely in classic high-low duet harmony. It's a nicely written little song, as well, with a buoyant beat and simple melodies that work. This was a curious case of two not-so-noteworthy artists combining to greater effect, because I've heard Safire's own record (I Wasn't Born Yesterday) and it was also nothing to write home about. Maybe Page and Safire should have formed a duo.
