Album Description
Step Right Up! Listen to Sideshow, the new recording from critically acclaimed band Twinemen. Listen for sounds you may have never heard before on nine new songs from a group that isn't afraid to turn the wheel. Dana Colley and Billy Conway from the band Morphine team up with songstress Laurie Sargent to create a sound that might make you remember, and still make you forget. Sideshow is music that might not hear the Big Tent, but still guarantees the musically curious, as well as the music lover, an earful of new...voices, horns, drums, guitars, basses, parades, plastes and whistles all mix into the music and songs, allowing a glimpse into the unsual world of the Twinemen. Step Right Up!
Customer Reviews:
Nice Record.......2006-12-18
If you're looking for something just like Morphine you might be disappointed. But I'm a big Morphine fan and I also enjoy this album.
disappointing.......2006-01-29
saw them play live last year, and unfortunately bought the cd at the show, before they played. dana colley and billy conway are still great. the band has tight drumming, chewy bass lines, and mind-blowing sax (and harmonica!) work, but the vocals and songwriting just aren't there. laurie sargent's voice and lyrics sound just like every other singer you hear on the not-very-good "contemporary adult" npr station. the only listenable songs in the set were morphine tunes, and even they were disappointing. it's a shame - if dana and billy had just looked a little harder for a new front (wo)man, this would probably be a great band. oh well. pick up a morphine disc instead, or the mark sandman box set.
Best Sideshow Around.......2005-08-09
The fusion of rock music with jazz and blues just doesn't get any better than this. Born from the ashes of Morphine this band had me from the moment I heard 'Spinner' from their first CD. 'Sideshow' is lighter in tone but just as good. 'Twilight' is simply gorgeous, a jazz-tinged love ballad with a great melody; you'll be humming it all day once you've heard it. For me, though, the highlight is 'I Slept Through It', a terrific social comment on the way some people go through life. There is one forgettable track but you can't be perfect. But being close to perfect ain't bad.
Not Morphine, but that's okay!.......2005-04-11
Okay, naturally comparisons are going to come along pitting this band against the late great Morphine. There are some moments when that shines through more than others (e.g., In My Head,St. Benedict's Marching Band and, in particular, A Little Strange [with uncredited vocals that sound A LOT like Mark Sandman]), but all in all Morphine couldn't have made this album - only Twinemen can really own this music. I think Laurie Sargent's position in the band will become more prominent over time; despite doing lead vocals on several songs she otherwise seems a bit in the shadows. Twilight is simply the most beautiful track on the album and clearly a standout song along with A Little Strange. I didn't discover Morphine until after their demise, don't make the same mistake with Twinemen.
