Lisa Gerrard, the former voice of Dead Can Dance, returns with a soundtrack following on her acclaimed scores to <I>Gladiator</I> (with Hans Zimmer) and <I>The Insider</I> (with Pieter Bourke). Those hoping for another glimpse into ecstasy through Gerrard's magnificent voice will be disappointed. This score to the New Zealand-set film relies more on texture and mood, with Gerrard's voice planted in a slowly undulating drift of synthesizers and sustained guitar lines. It's not until "Biking Home" that you might even recognize Gerrard's voice in this quietly joyful mood piece. She only gives herself full, if understated, voice on the symphonic closing track, "Go Forward" which echoes <I>Gladiator</I>'s "Now We Are Free," but with Maori chanting. Though there is some compelling music on <I>Whale Rider</I>, much of it sounds bereft without the accompanying images. <I>--John Diliberto</I>

Album Description

This ex-Dead Can Dance member imparts her own mixture of the ethereal, the worldly, the emotionally abstract, & the purely beautiful to all of her projects. She's been universally recognized & acclaimed for her body of work, received a Golden Globe & was Oscar-nominated for the ''Gladiator'' soundtrack. She has also worked on such high profile movies as ''Ali'' & ''The Insider''. This release is a soundtrack for the New Zealand indie film ''Whale Rider'', already the biggest grossing film in New Zealand ever. Gerrard's music, combined with the motion picture, provides an experience of profound power & spiritual enlightenment. Digipak/slipcase. 4AD/Beggars Banquet. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A sumptuous film score.......2006-11-09

I'm not really a big fan of the film "Whale Rider". I have tried watching it but the film never really appealed to me. What I did like was the film score by Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance fame. The DCD influence is obvious through out the album. The music is a haunting mix of ambient, classical, and world music. The songs are mostly instrumental but there is a bit of vocalization from Lisa (or so I think). The music is very relaxing to listen to. I feel like I am swimming underwater with the whales. There is nothing about this film score that I did not like. Lisa Gerrard did not disappoint me with this lovely album. Her work is always enchanting to listen to. This is how film scores should sound like...subtle and emotional.

4 out of 5 stars Whale Rider.......2006-11-05

A beautifully crafted album. Music for meditation, for quiet working, for contemplation, spiritual for growth.

4 out of 5 stars It's OK..........2005-10-15

This Soundtrack is very nice for people who like very quiet music, I expected more songs from the girl, but must of the soundtrack is sound..

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2005-08-23

This is a beautiful soundtrack to go with one of the best movies I have ever seen. Paikeas Whale, Waka in the Sky, They Came to Die, and Empty Water are worth the CD by themselves.
This soundtrack never fails to move me. If you are a fan of Lisa Gerrards work you wont be disappointed, she comes through as usual with her soul-stirring vocals.
Highly recommended!
