Album Description

The Detroit Cobras manage a pretty rare feat with their debut LP by transcending classic R&B material by sticking not to the original sound or slavishly recreating arrangements and stylistic trappings of the genre, but by finding the essence of the rough-and-tumble spirit of the original streetwise tunes the Cobras tackle on Mink Rat. Symphony For The Record Industry. 1998.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A desert island disc if there ever was one.......2007-02-19

The Detroit Cobras are the garage band of your dreams. Lock up your young and most impressionable little rock 'n' roll fans, and play this for 'em at full volume. They'll be screaming for more. Book-ended by the booty-shakin' opening of "Cha Cha Twist" and the most rollicking, unrelenting cover of Jackie DeShannon and Irma Thomas' "Breakaway" that you'll ever hear, there's nary a lull and by the time "Midnight Blues" rolls around, all will be right in the world and you'll be loving life again. The grinding, roughhouse guitar is totally primal - imagine the love child of Keith Richards and Link Wray - and Rachel Nagy's smoky snarl will make you think very unangelic thoughts. An American classic, already.

5 out of 5 stars These guys kick @$#!!!!!!!.......2005-08-27

I have over 1000 CDs. If I could only keep 10 of them, this would be number 2 on the keeper list!

4 out of 5 stars On a Personal Note..........2004-04-14

VERY VERY WEIRD...but I went to high school with Rachel Nagy. Honestly, I am really suprised at her talent. Really great rock outfit here, and she is a phenominal singer. Probably one of the best out there. I don't think I'd be going out on a limb comparing her to Janice Joplin...she just has that extra something special. Who knew? "Hitting on Nothing" is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars REAL garage rock.......2003-06-18

So many bands these days try to pass off as garage rock (the datsuns, the mooney suzuki) but this stuff is REAL. All of it is covers from the 50s just like the garage rockers of the 60s (the Sonics, The kingsman, The Troggs). The singer has a fantastic voice and the guitars go together wonderfully. great album pick it up.
