5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-11-13

I first heard Michael Penn when I was in college and this was the album that was out at the time. Penn is a fantastic song writer and musician. He is so underrated and that's ok. By far this cd is in my top 5 of favorite cd's of all time. He is incredible and I never get tired of hearing this cd. Listen to the lyrics and the music...you will be wrapped into the symbiotic genius that is Michael Penn. I have turned a lot of people on to his work but there are truly few that have experienced his genius. Thank you Michael Penn for producing such a moving and prolific first effort to keep me coming back for more. Bravo.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely one for the collection.......2006-09-30

"No Myth" hit me at just the right time. I was feeling sorry for myself and along comes this song which fit the mood perfectly. Well, things improved (Thanks for listening!) and I am happy to report that this still holds up really well after years of listening. There are a number of clever examinations of the pain caused by heartbreak. Each song has the right sound setting, the slow burn of "Cupid's got a Brand New Gun," the anxious pacing of "Big House," and the balance of gentle guitars and martial drum machines on "Battle Room" all work so well. As a singer Penn doesn't have a lot of emotional range, but he makes it work for him here, keeping just a touch of emotional distance works on these songs. With a different reading they easily could have been overwhelmingly dramatic; instead they convey the emotional depth found here with clarity. If you're a fan of the singer/songwriter genre, this is definitely one for your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Why Do Record Companies Do This to Us?.......2006-09-16

Yes, "No Myth" is one of my favorite albums too. And Michael Penn is top notch. So why leave out a track from the bonus album "Free for All" (not even mentioned in this re-issue's title) for an audience that is likely to be made up of obsessive collectors? Record companies do this all the time. Reason enough to scour the Web for other alternatives.

The gaffe makes rating this item a difficult task, the quality of the material starkly at odds with the packaging decision.

Man, there was no reason for this.

5 out of 5 stars A great album.......2006-07-22

What makes one song a hit, while similar songs by the same artist are soon forgotten? Well, that question could easily be asked of this album. This album came out in 1989, and its first song, No Myth, became a hit. But, in fact, all of the songs on this album are of a similar style and all are great!

I bought a copy of this album, on tape of course, when it first came out, and it was a treasured part of my music collection. But now, you can own this great album on CD. If you want to hear some great music by a sadly undervalued artist, then this is the album for you. I think that this is a great album, and highly recommend it!
