Featuring three new tracks and liner notes, The Very Best attempts to bring Foreigner into the '90s as a viable, working band. Problem is, the most convincing songs here are those recorded during the band's first four albums when they were young and, if not hungry, at least not played out. "Jukebox Hero," "Hot Blooded," "Head Games," and "Cold As Ice" all sound as ripe and ready for radio as the day they were released. Singer Lou Gramm gave Foreigner its face and with the counterpunch of ex-Spooky Tooth guitarist Mick Jones proved a formidable team. The inclusion of their gospel-influenced hit "I Want to Know What Love Is" is the only addition from the 10-cut greatest hits album Records. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
SOLID CD.......2007-03-05
some reviewer gave this disc 1 star! Gee, 1 whole star?! Obviously that person is no Foreigner fan. Foreigner put out some great music in their heyday and a lot of those cuts are found here. Lou Gramm is one of the great rock voices and he's well represented here. For those not familiar with the band this is a good CD to get your feet wet. The 1 star reviewer is entitled to his opinion but it isn't a very good one at that. This is a solid disc.
Not so foreign at all..........2007-02-05
Foreigner is not one of my favorite musical artists, but I do like most of their hits. I bought this CD to get my 2 favorites, "Waiting For A Girl Like You" and "Urgent". "Waiting" is like something out of a beautiful, hazy dream, and "Urgent" is hot, hot, hot, especially with that sax. I also like "Juke Box Hero", "Double Vision", "That Was Yesterday" and, of course, "I Want To Know What Love Is". The CD kicks off with 3 newer cuts that were not hits (to my knowledge), and they are OK, but they sound a little forced, as if the idea was to make new songs that sound just like the old hits. They're not bad, just not very inspiring. On the other hand, some songs that I didn't love that much back in the 70's sound really good on this CD, such as "Cold As Ice" and "Head Games". So, all in all this is a fun way to revisit the mid-70's to mid-80's, and if you like guitar-based rock, I would recommend it. I can't think of one hit that was left out of this collection.
The Below One Star Reviewer Is A Huge Moron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-29
To the reviewer known as T FOR TEXAS,
Your opinion about Foreigner is not required. The bands that you hate so much are like Dire Straits, and Foreigner are equally great. The bands that you love so much such as AC/DC, Queen, and The Who are equally bad!! So start liking them now or go straight to HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The below 1 star reviewer is from India, where Foreigner albums aren't even available. I wish this little twerp can stay away from all the American websites. He is getting me on my nerves fast and when this wannable yankee he said "Waiting for a Girl Like You is one of the most idiotic songs I have ever heard". Get him out of here!!!!!!!!!
Foreigner are one of my favourite bands of all time. "Waiting for a Girl Like You" is one of the most finest, mellow, nicest, loveliest, gorgeous, marvelous, superb, terrific, great, and prettiest song I have ever heard.
I think it is my all-time favorite song. The Very Best And Beyond is a great collection of Foreigner songs, WITHOUT EDITING!!!!!!!!! Other hits like "Juke Box Hero", "Urgent", "Cold As Ice", "I Don't Want To Live Without You", and "Dirty White Boy" are all equally great. Please buy this which will make you happy. Please ignore the below negative one star reviewer, he will get you all frustrated. He is a really bad music lover.
Get this with all albums from Dire Straits.
Battery is wrong, this is garbage.......2006-08-17
FOREIGNER IS THE WORST OF THE WORST.THEY ARE EVEN MORE WORSE THAN GREEN DAY.EACH AND EVERY SONG AND ALBUM OF THEIR SUCKS.WAITING FOR A GIRL LIKE YOU IS THE MOST IDIOTIC SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD.DONT LISTEN TO THE REVIEWER BELOW ME WHO IS AN ALIAS OF WHIRLIGIG FROM BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIA.BUY ANY CD FROM ICONS LIKE LED ZEPPELIN,PINK FLOYD,THE ROLLING STONES,QUEEN AND AC/DC INSTEAD.
THE GODS OF LOVE SONGS!!!!.......2006-08-16
I love Foreigner as they were one of the greatest. They were the gods of love songs and they are talented. My favorite songs are Waiting For A Girl Like You, and I Dont Want To Live Without You. Those 2 songs are just sweet, nice, beautiful, and very lovely. This is a billion times much better than lousy bands like Metallica, AC/DC, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and Green Day. I love this CD. Highly recommended.
Go get this with Dire Straits today.
