Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This Was... but really it wasn't.......2007-04-22

I'm in the process of replacing some original (reel-to-reel) recordings from (LP) disk, greatest hits of the 70's. I was looking forward to hearing a clean rendition of my now-hissy and drop-outish Tull tape.

My issue is: the engineering/re-mastering is really terrible! I listened to this album (and Standup) while A-B'ing the sound difference between my old tape and the new clean CD remastering. I was really disappointed in the mixing and engineering, the worst of any albums I've ever once loved and now hear sounding much worse than they should.

Speaking as audiophile, former recording/audio engineer, 70's DJ, and someone who saw Jethro Tull many times in concerts large and small, I think this CD is missing the guts of their dynamic range; it is "thin".
The flute is mixed way up front and the guitars are mostly pulled back into the woodwork, especially during hot, harmonic duets between the instruments. The midrange is wimpy too... OK, that's from a pure (audio) sound perspective.

Of course anyone who knows (and certainly anyone who loves) Tull and in particular this wonderfully quirky, jazz-oriented album would be happy having this if the cassette or LP record are shot or eaten by the dog.
Although I've been on a mission to trim down my huge old collection of tapes, and replace the worst of them with brand new CD's with remastering of the original tracks, in this case the original sounds better even with hiss, to my audiophile ears. Of course it's a great album, both musically and historically.

4 out of 5 stars This Still Is.......2007-04-18

Aqualung overshadows the early Tull catalogue, and that's too bad because this first album is head and shoulders above a lot of the contemporary competition. The musicianship really shines, and although the obligatory drum solo from "Dharma For One" is tedious, it speaks to its time. Many of these are blues riffs, and that's why the album stands up over time. The CD is remastered and the sound is sparkling, a nice glimpse backward in time. Worth picking up if you never knew the early Tull oeuvre.

4 out of 5 stars A great view of the primordial Tull.......2007-03-15

This is not the Tull that made history, but the history behind the Tull. Fun to listen to, if you like the band.

4 out of 5 stars Mick Abrahms of the John Evan Band.......2007-01-03

A worthy addition to the music library of any fan of late 60's British Rock. At the time, Mick Abrahms was a guitarist on par or better than his peers. (Eric Clapton, Alvin Lee, Pete Townsend, Robin Trower, Jeff Beck, etc...). Oh sure, Ian Anderson is heard on this disk, but clearly, Abrahm's star shines far brighter here. If you enjoy 12-bar blues, you will clearly find Abrahm's contribution worthy. Just order "This Was", and you will not be disappointed...

5 out of 5 stars "This Was" - a seminal work and influence on Rock/Jazz Concept albums.......2006-10-02

I am a performing musician with some 40+ yrs of presenting music in public.

When I first heard "This Was" I was blown away. I think I wore the grooves out of the record.

This work by Jethro Tull is one of their leanest and finest. It impacted me greatly before I entered music school at NTSU. It impacted my sense of "groove" and remained a part of my own efforts to recapture that magic sound they had. Not that my own work sounded like that, but the feel, the groove and the ambience of the whole LP captured a magical world that had not yet been put in a recording.

So, this record is not only a classic, it is one of a kind. After this, JT made good records, but I fell away as a fan as they became more "commericalized" with their themes. I felt they sort of lost their way from this sound.
