Amazon.com essential recording

Exploding onto the late 1980s rock scene with this energetic, sensual, and shamelessly personal debut, Melissa Etheridge instantly proved herself a skilled singer-songwriter and thunderstorm of a performer. This radio-friendly rock collection lays out the Etheridge fundamentals. "Bring Me Some Water," the driven, bluesy plea of an abandoned lover, is easily the strongest cut here. Its infectious rhythmic backdrop perfectly supports Etheridge's rowdy, passionate vocals to make this sexually charged lament unforgettable. This album also launched the radio favorite "Similar Features" and "Like the Way I Do," another uptempo, jealousy-laden rocker. Actually, the album is almost overripe with scathing indictments of former lovers, but it also makes it clear that Etheridge is a growing musician. These early efforts are so power-packed that it's easy to overlook redundancy and focus on all that raw emotion. --Sally Weinbach

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars her best album.......2007-05-15

This album made me a fan and is still her best work. She rocks, rolls and emotes in these songs in a raw, powerful way that pulls you into the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Melissa Etheridge.......2007-04-03

This is melissas first album, and is one of the best. She really pours her heart out in all of the songs, my favorite song by her, "like the way i do" is on there as well, that song really has a lot of meaning to me. the music from that song, actually, is the reversed version of number ten, "i want you" also a great song. Other greats are "bring me some water" "Chrome Plated Heart" and "Dont you need" but all the songs are great on this album, definitely worth the buy. I really recommend it for any fan of melissa or any fan of good music in general.

4 out of 5 stars Music and voice as a sociologicial cornerstone. .......2005-12-04

What can I say about this album. I was a senior in college when it was released and discovered it through my sister while summering in New York. I was touched by the beautiful voices and lyrics in songs like Daydream Tomorrows. I feel shades of Melissa Etheridge's song "Like The Way I Do" when I hear "The Healing Time" It is the most influential and wonderful collection of music I have ever come across in a long time. I cannot even begin relate the ocean of memories I have intertwined with this album. I can only say that it helped shape my life, and it made me see music and voice as a spiritual, creative, and sociologicial cornerstone. Really a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Ethridge CD.......2005-06-09

I purchased this CD in my "college days" - about 12 years ago now - and I still love it!

This is one of those rare CD's where every song is good, and each song can speak to you about at least one time in your life...

Melissa sings with such passion, that it's easy to get caught up in her music, and I found this to be especially true with this CD.

If you like "folk-rock" music, you can't go wrong with this CD!
